AirAsia Malaysia (flight code AK) is set to strengthen it’s presence in Australia with the launch of a direct route from Kuala Lumpur to Darwin. This new service, which will start operating on 27th June 2025, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s expansion efforts, providing travellers with more affordable options to explore Australia’s Northern Territory.

The new route will operate four times a week, offering passengers the opportunity to experience Darwin’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and thrilling adventures. From the iconic Mindil Beach sunset to encounters with wildlife at Crocosaurus Cove, Darwin serves as a gateway to some of Australia’s most spectacular destinations, including Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for it’s natural beauty and beautiful culture.

Since March 2024. AirAsia Malaysia has been actively expanding in Australia, starting flights between Kuala Lumpur and Perth. With the addition of Darwin, the airline now serves five Australian cities. AirAsia Group, in both Indonesia and Malaysia, operates in Perth and Cairns, while it’s sister airline AirAsia X (flight code D7) flies to Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. The Darwin expansion further builds AirAsia’s commitment to enhance international connectivity and meet the demand of affordable travel options.

The introduction of Kuala Lumpur Darwin route has been met with enthusiasm by key industry figures, including Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Robyn Cahill OAM, who highlights the positive impact of the new connection.

“We welcome this important milestone for AirAsia to reconnect Darwin with the global capital city of Kuala Lumpur.  This will not only improve air accessibility and affordability for Territorians, but will make it easier to invest, visit and do business in the Territory.”

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, expressed their excitement over the new route, emphasizing the significance in offering travellers access to a unique Australian destination.

“We are thrilled to launch our very first flight to Darwin, creating greater opportunities for both leisure and business travellers to explore one of Australia’s most vibrant and unique destinations. At the same time, we are opening a new gateway to Asia and beyond for ‘Territorians’ in the Top End of Australia.”

He further highlighted AirAsia’s commitment to make traveling more accessible and affordable especially for adventure seekers looking for alternative travel experiences beyond traditional tourist spots.

“As adventure travel continues to grow in popularity, we see Darwin as a hidden gem for Malaysians and travellers across Southeast Asia, offering a distinctive experience beyond the usual tourist hotspots. With our seamless Fly-Thru services via Kuala Lumpur, Darwin is now more accessible than ever for travellers from key markets within our network, including Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, China, Cambodia, South Korea, and beyond.”

Rob Porter, Executive General Manager of Airports for Airport Development Group, underscored the significance of the route for both outbound and inbound travellers.

“Beyond offering greater choice for Territorians, this new link will also strengthen inbound tourism, supporting local businesses and cementing Darwin’s position as a key international gateway. We look forward to working closely with AirAsia to grow this service and explore future opportunities for expansion.”

Suzana Bishop, Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, Northern Territory Government, also lauded the new connection, noting that it will unlock diverse travel experiences for international visitors.

“From breathtaking national parks and thrilling wildlife encounters to dark sky stargazing, this new connection unlocks a diverse range of unforgettable experiences for our emerging Asian markets and beyond.”
