Malaysian talent Moses Mahendran has achieved a significant milestone by serving as the assistant director for a major Kollywood project. Adding to the prestige, the film is none other than the highly anticipated Veera Dheera Sooran, starring acclaimed actor Chiyaan Vikram. Directed by SU Arun Kumar, the film is set for its grand release tomorrow, March 27, 2025. Having established himself in the Malaysian entertainment industry, Moses Mahendran now marks a new chapter in his career with this remarkable opportunity in the Tamil film industry.

Moses Mahendran, hailing from Selayang, grew up in a modest family with a deep passion for filmmaking. However, his parents encouraged him to focus on academics and pursue a stable career to support the family. Since filmmaking was not a guaranteed profession, Moses decided to study culinary arts after completing his SPM. He went on to build a successful career as a chef, earning a good income and working in the industry for eight years.

Despite his achievements, his passion for filmmaking remained unfulfilled. After much contemplation, he made a bold and risky decision—he quit his job to pursue his dream in the film industry.

To prepare himself for this new journey, he equipped himself with filmmaking knowledge through an application called Level Up Learning – Filmmaking, which featured video lessons from renowned filmmakers. After gaining a fundamental understanding of filmmaking, he took his first steps into the industry, beginning his career in film production.

Moses also had the opportunity to work with acclaimed Malaysian director JK Wicky on his upcoming untitled project. JK Wicky and Ganessan Manohgaran had previously attended a Visual Storytelling course sponsored by FINAS, where director SU Arun Kumar was invited as a special guest. It was through this connection that Moses secured the opportunity to work on Veera Dheera Sooran.

When asked about his experience working on the project, Moses shared, “It was an amazing experience working with such creative masters. I learned a lot from SU Arun Kumar sir. He taught me the importance of never forgetting our homeland, no matter where we go. He advised me to create films that reflect Malaysia’s origin stories—authentic narratives rather than trying to incorporate a Kollywood touch. Indian filmmakers represent their own culture and tell their own stories, and in the same way, we as Malaysians should showcase our unique stories to the world. This was a deeply personal and valuable lesson, one that I will always carry with me throughout my filmmaking journey.”

This valuable insight will undoubtedly shape Moses’ approach to storytelling, encouraging him to embrace a uniquely Malaysian perspective in his filmmaking. By staying true to local narratives and cultural roots, he has the potential to contribute to the growth of Malaysia’s film industry by producing authentic stories that resonate with the local audience.

When asked about the differences between working on Malaysian projects and being part of a Kollywood production, Moses shared with Varnam Malaysia, “The creative and technical aspects are vastly different. I have witnessed the immense hard work of those who strive to bring the director’s vision to life on screen. We must continuously learn, refine our filmmaking skills, and work towards creating the same cinematic magic that they achieve in their films.”

Apart from Veera Dheera Sooran, Moses has also worked as an assistant director and art director for an upcoming series and telemovie, which are yet to be announced. Veera Dheera Sooran features Vikram in the lead role, alongside SJ Suryah, Dushara Vijayan, and several other talented actors, with music composed by GV Prakash Kumar.

Moses Mahendran’s journey is a reflection of his unwavering passion, resilience, and dedication to filmmaking. From working as a chef to taking a bold leap into the film industry, his determination has led him to an incredible milestone—becoming the assistant director of a major Kollywood project. His hard work and perseverance have finally paid off, allowing him to achieve his dream and make his mark in the industry. With this remarkable feat, Moses has not only opened new doors for himself but also paved the way for aspiring Malaysian filmmakers to chase their dreams fearlessly. As he continues to grow in his career, his journey serves as an inspiration, proving that with determination and passion, anything is possible.
