Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh recently reflected on her upbringing in Malaysia’s vibrant multicultural society and expressed her deep appreciation for Indian cinema. Speaking in anticipation of the release of her debut musical film, Wicked, Yeoh shared insights into her lifelong connection with Indian culture.

“I grew up in Malaysia, a wonderfully multicultural society, where I had many Indian friends. From a young age, I watched numerous Indian movies and even learned to sing Indian songs. I’ve always been deeply familiar with Indian culture and cinema,” Yeoh shared with PTI.

In Wicked, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, Yeoh takes on the role of Madame Morrible. The movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, also reunites her with the filmmaker behind Crazy Rich Asians.

Yeoh admitted that the thought of singing for the film initially felt daunting, but she found the musical genre incredibly inspiring. “It’s a magical world where characters suddenly burst into song and dance instead of simply speaking, and I absolutely love that,” she shared.

One of the key reasons Yeoh decided to be part of Wicked was her confidence in Chu’s storytelling abilities.

Commending his dedication to diversity, she remarked, “Many of us have worked hard to push for these opportunities, often advocating for meaningful change. But it takes visionary storytellers like Jon M. Chu to bring these narratives to life and shine a spotlight on them.”

With a remarkable career featuring global successes such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Yeoh underscored the significance of impactful storytelling.

“Film and television are incredibly powerful tools for connecting with audiences and shedding light on important issues,” she stated.

Wicked, which premiered on November 22, features a star-studded cast including Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, and more.
