It’s been over a decade since Lyca Production was one of the most celebrated production houses in Tamil cinema. Backed by Lyca Group, the production house has delivered some of the most expensive and celebrated films in Kollywood industry. However, despite the hit record, the company is now facing severe financial issues, reportedly facing losses of over 600 crores annually. It is said that there are possibilities of a closure of Lyca Productions, and leaves the Kollywood industry to pop the question on what led to this downfall.
The Rise Of Lyca Production
Lyca Productions made it’s landmark into the Tamil film Industry in 2014 with Kaththi starring Vijay and directed by A.R Murugadoss. The film’s massive success was one of the reasons Lyca was established as a huge production house. Over the next few years, it backed multiple acclaimed films like Vada Chennai (2018), Enakku Innoru Per Irukku (2016) and Ippadai Vellum (2017), but its biggest breakthrough came in 2018 with Enthiran sequel 2.0.

Directed by Shankar and starring Rajinikanth, 2.0 became the biggest grossing Tamil film of all time, ranking over 700 crores worldwide. The success made Lyca one of the elite categories of film production, surpassing banners like Sun Pictures, Raaj Kamal films. The company went on to bigger films such as Darbar, Ponniyin Selvan: 1 and 2 and even into Bollywood films with Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu.
In just 10 years, Lyac produced over 30 films and distributed several others. With Tamil Cinema’s highest grossing film, its biggest franchises and the three most expensive Tamil films under them, Lyca appeared to be an unstoppable force.
The Financial Crisis
The crisis in Lyca Productions started appearing in 2023, a string of back to back box office failures. Films like Chandramukhi 2, Lal Salaam, Indian 2, Vettaiyan and Vidaamuyarchi, despite all these films, were featured by huge stars like Kamal Hasssan, Ajith Kumar, and Rajinikanth. These five films made a combined cost of at least 1100 crore, and managed to only collect approximately 500 crores at the box office. Even after accounting for digital rights, they suffered a huge loss of over 600 crores.
Lyca’s financial issues were further built by the decline in revenue from digital streaming platforms. The company had heavily banked on OTT films to offset box office losses, but the decreasing demand for Tamil films on streaming services hit them hard.

One of the most striking examples is one of Lyca’s involvement in L2:Empuraan, a Mohanlal starred and Prithiviraj direction. The production house had entered a deal to distribute the film, assuming it would generate revenue from streaming rights. However, when they expected numbers to fail, Lyca was forced to pull off the project just two weeks before its scheduled release.
Is this the end for Lyca?
According to industry insiders, Lyca Productions financial troubles have reached a breaking point and it is expected to shut down after completing its final two films. The production house that once redefined the Kollywood industry with multiple record breaking films is now struggling to sustain their operations. The impact of the downfall is being felt across the industry, raising concerns about the sustainability of high budget productions in the Tamil film industry
