In a display of community spirit and compassion, the Sri Maha Rajakaliamman Temple in Putra Heights opened it’s doors for the victims of the devastating gas pipeline explosion that took place yesterday morning. The temple is situated near the blast area along Jalan Putra Harmoni, quickly transformed into a temporary relief centre, providing aid and shelter to those affected by the tragic incident.
According to the temple adviser, R. Maickavasagam, the explosion sent a hit of panic through the community as injured residents were looking for a safe place to refuge. Seeing the need for immediate assistance, the temple’s president, committee members and devotees took swift action, by opening the temple gates to accommodate the victims.
“People were screaming and crying for help. Our committee members and devotees did not hesitate. We immediately opened our doors and allowed the victimes to enter”. Maickavasagam said.
Within an hour, the temple had become a fully operational relief centre. Police officers, paramedics and first responders including the Red Crescent Society (BSMM), arrived at the location to assist those in need. Volunteers from the temple, along with medical professionals provided first aid to victims, some who had sustained severe burns, bleeding wounds and fractures.

“Some victims had burns all over their bodies, while others were traumatised. We gave them medical attention and emotional support. It didn’t matter if we were Indian, Malay, Chinese or foreigners. If they were hurt and needed help, they are welcome here”.
Beyond medical aid, the temple provided essentials such as food, drinks and rest areas. Volunteers set up tents and ensured access to toilets, offering a sense of relief amid the chaos of the explosion. In a show of religious respect, the temple also made space for the Muslim residents and rescue workers to perform their prayers within it’s compound.

The temple’s role in this crisis shows the unity and selflessness within Malaysia’s multicultural society. In times of need, place of worship often becomes a safe space for people of all backgrounds and the Sri Maha Rajakaliamman Temple’s response to the tragedy is an example of this spirit.
“We have always served the people here. Today we just did what was right. Our doors are open to all”.
As investigations into the explosion continue, the temple stands as a beacon of hope, providing humanity transcends race, religion and background when faced such difficult situation.
