One of the key factors driving excitement around Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life is his long-awaited reunion with acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The duo is teaming up after an impressive 36-year gap since their iconic collaboration in the critically acclaimed classic Nayakan, making this project a highly anticipated cinematic event for fans and film enthusiasts alike.
During the Thug Life press meet, Kamal Haasan addressed why he and Mani Ratnam hadn’t worked together in recent years. He remarked, “The reason we didn’t collaborate all this time was due to us. But the reason we’ve come together again — that’s because of you. When the audience makes their voice heard, everyone, from producers to distributors, listens.”

Reflecting on his bond with Mani Ratnam and their shared passion for cinema, Kamal Haasan said, “Nothing has changed between us. We used to sit on parked bikes along Eldams Road, talking endlessly about our dreams for cinema. We’ve only managed to achieve about 25 percent of what we envisioned — Nayakan was one of them, and this film is another. Many times, the realities of the industry force us to scale down our ambitions. But through it all, you — the audience — have continued to lift us up. For the delays and unfulfilled promises, we’re sorry. Thug Life is our heartfelt offering to you.”
Kamal Haasan also fondly recalled some special moments from the set. “You can tell a team is truly strong when everyone is happy and fully dedicated to the film,” he said. “Mani Ratnam would be on set by 5:30 every morning — that’s why we affectionately call him ‘Anjarai Mani Ratnam.’ He’s always been like that, right from the start. His world revolves around cinema, and in that way, he reminds me a lot of K. Balachander sir.”
Thug Life features a star-studded ensemble cast including Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Abhirami, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Tanikella Bharani, Vadivukkarasi, Chinni Jayanth, Vaiyapuri, Bagavathi Perumal, Baburaj, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf, Arjun Chidambaram, Chetan, and Rajashri Deshpande.
The film is jointly produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. Thug Life is slated for a theatrical release on June 5.
