In a landmark step towards digital education, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced their plans to equip all schools in Malaysia with smartboards by 2027. The initiative aligns with the new national curriculum and reflects the government’s broader goal to integrate technology more deeply into teaching and learning.
Ministry of Education Fadhlina Sidek shared the update during the Smartboard Handover Ceremony at SMK Bayan Lepas, Penang. Where she presented 50 smartboard units to schools in the state. She also shared,
“We aim to see smartboard usage fully integrated across all levels of education by 2027. This will complement the new curriculum and I believe it will significantly boost our efforts in enhancing classroom engagement and digital learning”.

Penang has become the first state in Malaysia to achieve full smartboard implementation cross all 396 of it’s schools, with the collaborative effort involving Unity Government MPs, the State government, and strategic partners such as Public Bank. Fadhlina has also congratulated the state for it’s leadership and urged other regions to do the same as well, in advancing the quality of education through technology.
What Are Smart Boards
Smartboards are interactive digital displays that functions just like whiteboards. Equipped with touch, and gesture capabilities, they enable real time collaboration, multimedia integration and more immersive learning experience.
According to the Education Minister, Fadhlina. Smartboards are already transforming classrooms with teachers fully utilising them to deliver more engaging lessons. She shared that classroom observation have highlighted increased student participation and attention span.
“Students are highly active, entertained and show how strong concentration when these technologies are used. It subtly transforms the entire teaching and learning process”.

The Education Ministry’s smartboard programme targets over 10,000 schools nationwide and involves more than just hardware deployment. Supporting infrastructure will also be upgraded, including Teachers Activity Centres.
They also noted that implementation across states would depend on several factors. The Ministry is monitoring progress across states and aims to ensure that no school is left behind in the digital transition.
As the country moves toward this ambitious 2027 target, the smartboard programme stands as a promising initiative for educational reform.
