For over three decades, Ratha Sivalingam has been connecting communities and generations, not with speeches or activities but with cookies. The 73 year old home baker’s irresistible range of traditional and modern cookies has become a festive staple across Malaysia, and beloved by many from all backgrounds.

Using classic Malay recipes, she has learnt the art of baking cookies that only taste delicious but gives a feel of nostalgia. Her cookies are halal, eggless and vegetarian friendly, making it suitable for people from various communities. A choice that has earned her loyal and diverse customer based.

Her interest in baking started by chance. During a two year stay in United States, her son had a Boy Scout event, and asked her if she could bring food for it. Ratha then brought a store made cake and decorated it herself. That moment her passion for baking sparked.

Upon returning to Malaysia, Ratha decided to pursue in baking more seriously. She eventually opened a bakery with a friend in Kepong, which drew many regular customers during festive seasons like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas. Though the shop is now closed, Ratha runs her business from home and her customers loyalty for her hasn’t faded.

“I take orders anytime, but the demand spikes during festive periods. I also make cookies based on customers request. Eggless cookies are highly popular”, said Ratha.

Her bestselling cookies include pineapple tarts, which make up more than 80% of her orders, along with chocolate chip cookies, butter cookies and mixed fruit cookies. Each cookies of hers is handmade with care using recipes that are rooted in tradition.

For many customers, Ratha’s cookies are more than just a sweet treat,

“My friend Shashi Kumar (Ratha’s son) brought some cookies to the office. They were so delicious almost like something my mother would make. When I asked who made them, he told me it was his mother. I was surprised by how good they were, and I immediately placed an order to send some to my mother and relatives in the village for Hari Raya”, shared Fatihah Sofian

Ratha sees her baking not just as business but a form of connection, a way to revive childhood memories, build friendships and celebrate Malaysian diversity. Now working from her home kitchen, Ratha continues to take orders from loyal and new customers, serving up cookies that not only satisfy our taste buds but warm the hearts.
