Tamil filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj known for his action thrillers and the creation of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), has revealed his preference for a sequel to Master (2021) over Leo (2023) , both which starred Thalapathy Vijay. The statement comes amid uncertainty surrounding Vijay’s future in cinema, with him recently announcing his retirement to focus on politics after his last film Jana Nayagan.
In a recent interview with film critic Sudhir Srinivasan, Lokesh candidly expressed his creative learning.
“Only time can tell. Moreover, Vijay anna has to tell. While we can ask him to appear in a cameo role (in future LCU films). I actually wish to do Master 2 with him”.
Lokesh then explained that the character JD from Master holds a special place in his heart.

“There’s a part of the story that is not said. I personally like watching him as JD, obviously Leo is a strong character in the LCU, and people love him but I like JD more. I have a proper idea for a sequel and even he is aware of it”.
Lokesh also addressed the widespread fan speculation about the future of Leo Das in the LCU. With Leo being a box office success but facing criticism over its second half flashback portions, the director admitted he had taken the feedback constructively.
“I wont say it pulled the film down, but it’s a sign for me to refine my writing”, he said. However, with Vijay’s political commitments taking over, Lokesh noted that Leo Das’ inclusion in future LCU is uncertain. “We now have to lay down a plan that doesn’t feature Leo Das”.
What’s next for Lokesh?
As for what’s next, Lokesh confirmed that Kaithi 2 and Vikram 2 are on cards, following the timeline of the LCU. There’s also a discussion for a standalone film with Suriya’s Rolex character but is still not confirmed yet.
Meanwhile, Lokesh’s upcoming film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, is slated for August 14th 2025 release. The action film is not part of the LCU but has already generated buzz for its ensemble cast that includes Nagarjuna Akkineni, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. Pooja Hegde is said to be appearing in a special role and speculations suggest Aamir Khan will be involved as well.
Clarifying how he writes characters tailored for specific stars, Lokesh added with a laugh.
“Kamal Haasan sir cannot do Coolie, and Rajini sir cannot do Vikram”, highlighting how he creates stories for each character.

As the anticipation for Coolie builds and the LCU continues to expand, fans have to wait and see if JD will ever return to the big screen.
