Labuan has reason to celebrate as two of its brightest students have brought international recognition to the island. Among them, Sharaneshri Saravanan, a Malaysian Indian student, stood out by earning the prestigious ‘Top in the World’ accolade in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Mathematics exam for the November 2024 series. Sharaneshri, along with fellow high-achiever Nicole Chia Xin Dong, achieved a perfect score of 100 percent, marking a proud moment for their schools and community.

Both outstanding students are from Labuan International School (LIS). Nicole has been with the institution since her primary school years, while Sharaneshri’s journey at LIS began even earlier, starting from Kindergarten.

The awards ceremony was held yesterday at Sunway University in Selangor, where the accolades were presented by Kanjna Paranthaman, the Country Regional Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, International Education. LIS Principal Fadlin Aimuni stated that the students’ remarkable achievements not only reflect their personal excellence but also demonstrate the school’s solid academic foundation.

“This esteemed award is granted by Cambridge Assessment International Education to students who attain the highest global mark in a particular subject. Both students are outstanding role models, excelling not only academically but also in sports, music, and debate. They have actively represented LIS in numerous competitions. Their success is a testament to the school’s holistic educational approach, which fosters excellence in intellect, physical development, and character,” she told Bernama.

She noted that this record-breaking accomplishment has established a new benchmark of excellence for LIS and stands as a strong source of inspiration for future generations of students in Labuan. “This achievement goes beyond academic excellence—it’s a proud moment for the entire LIS community. Our students have shown that with commitment, encouragement, and a well-rounded approach, success can be attained in all aspects of life,” Fadlin said.

The exceptional accomplishments of Sharaneshri Saravanan and Nicole Chia Xin Dong not only shine a spotlight on their individual talents but also affirm the quality of education at Labuan International School. Their success on a global stage is a reflection of hard work, resilience, and the nurturing environment provided by LIS. As they continue to inspire their peers and younger students, their achievements serve as a powerful reminder that with passion and perseverance, world-class excellence is within reach—even from a small island like Labuan.
