Malaysia has carved out a significant moment in badminton history, achieving two unprecedented feats in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings, released earlier this week.
In a breakthrough for women’s badminton, national duo Pearly Tan and M.Thinaah have climbed to world No.3 becoming the first Malaysian women’s pair in 16 years to reach the world’s top three. The last time a women’s duo achieved such heist was back in 2009, when Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty held the world No.1 position.
Pearly-Thinaah’s success comes on the heels of their impressive runner-up finish at the Indonesia Open 2025, where they put up a spirited fight against world No.1 is Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China in a gripping three-set final, narrowly failing 23-25, 21-12, 21-19.
Although the top spot remains out of immediate reach, Sheng Shu-Tang Ning currently enjoy a substantial 20,000 point lead, the Malaysians are now eyeing the No.2 position, currently held by Japan’s Chiharu Shida and Nambi Matsuyama. With strong momentum behind them, Pearly and Thinaah are poised to challenge for higher honors when the World Tour resumes at next month’s Japan Open.

Malaysia’s strength in depth in the men’s doubles category was also highlighted in the latest update. Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun remain steady at No.7, while several other national pairs continue to maintain strong positions:
Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King(No.24), Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong (No.25), Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi (No.31)
A New Era for Malaysian Badminton
These latest rankings are a testament to Malaysia’s growing dominance in doubles and reflect a renewed era of consistency, competitiveness, and global recognition.
While Pearly-Thinaah’s climb brings hope for more visibility in women’s badminton, the men’s doubles achievements showcase the country’s unprecedented depth at the highest level.
With the Japan Open and other key World Tour events on the horizon, Malaysian fans have plenty to look forward to and plenty of reasons to believe that the best is yet to come.
