Sri Murugan Centre (SMC) remains steadfast in its mission to uphold the vision of its late founder, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. M. Thambirajah, by empowering students from the B40 community through access to quality education. Driven by the belief that education is a pathway out of poverty, SMC continues to champion this cause with unwavering dedication.

According to SMC Co-Director Surain Kanda, Thambirajah’s legacy and principles continue to guide the organization’s core mission, serving as a beacon for its ongoing efforts.

He described the passing of the esteemed educationist as a profound loss for the Indian community in Malaysia, but affirmed that SMC remains deeply committed to its mission of empowering the B40 group and breaking the cycle of poverty.

“To realise this vision, SMC concentrates on three key areas,” he explained. “Firstly, delivering educational support to students from B40 families; secondly, offering short-term assistance to underprivileged households to help meet their daily needs; and thirdly, guiding B40 families in identifying opportunities for additional income.”

He shared this with reporters during the final tribute ceremony for Thambirajah, held at SMC earlier today.

Family members, friends, and former students began arriving at SMC from 10:30 a.m. to pay their final respects to Thambirajah, who passed away yesterday at the age of 83.

Thambirajah established SMC in 1982 as a non-governmental organisation dedicated to education and character development within the Indian community. Meanwhile, his daughter, T. Sumithra, expressed her hope that her father’s legacy would continue to inspire young Indians to rise, contribute meaningfully, and uplift the community.

“His legacy must live on,” she said. “To all the young Indians out there, I hope his life and work have inspired you to do even more for the Indian community in Malaysia. He will be deeply missed. He was not only a loving father but also my closest friend. I truly hope we can all come together to carry forward the legacy he left behind.”

As Sri Murugan Centre enters a new chapter without its visionary founder, the spirit and values instilled by Tan Sri M. Thambirajah continue to resonate deeply within the organisation and the wider community. His lifelong dedication to education, empowerment, and service has left an indelible mark on countless lives. With the continued support of his family, the leadership of SMC, and the commitment of the community, his legacy will endure—fueling future generations to strive, succeed, and uplift others, just as he did.
