Malaysia’s rising badminton star K.Letshanaa saw her inspiring run at the U.S. Open come to a close in the quarter-finals on Friday, falling to India’s Tanvi Sharma in straight sets. Despite the defeat, the 20-year-old shuttler leaves lowa in renewed attention and praise for her growing potential.
Letshanaa, ranked world No.50 went down 21-13, 21-16 in a 33 minute clash against 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma. The India’s teenager, ranked world No.66, had already stunned second seed Nguyen Thuy Lin of Vietnam and Taiwan Open runner-up Pitchamon Opatniputh before halting Letshanaa’s campaign.
Letshanaa entered the quarter-finals on the back of her career, best win over Japan’s former world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Nozomi Okuhara. She followed that up with a gritty victory over world N0.49 Aakarshi Kashyap of India, showcasing both composure and court against more experienced opponents.

National singles coach K.Yogendran acknowledged her efforts, calling the overall performance a step forward in her career but stressed the need for consistency.
“She deserves credit for beating higher ranked players but she must be more confident after this to improve in her next tournament”, said K.Yogendran.
Letshanaa’s defeat highlights the tough transition from early promise to sustained competitiveness at the senior international level. But the victories over Okuhara and Kashyap show she has the talent and resilience to take on top-tier players.
She will now shift her focus to the Canada Open in Markham, Ontario, where she will look to build on her recent form. For now, her campaign in lowa, particularly the win over Okuhara, marks a career milestone and a reminder of her potential on the international stage.
