After months of speculation and behind the scenes negotiations, Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah have officially committed to continue training and competing under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), at least until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The World No.3 duo, who have become household names in Malaysian badminton are expected to sign a new contract before departing for the Japan Open (15th July-20th). Their renewed commitment provides much-needed relief to fans, officials, and BAM alike, putting to rest the uncertainty that had been happening since their previous contract expired in December 2023.
A Strategic Step for Malaysian Badminton’s Olympic Hopes
The pair’s decision is particularly significant as Malaysia continues to chase its elusive first Olympic gold medal. With Pearly-Thinaah among the country’s most consistent and successful badminton pairs, their continued presence within BAM ensures they receive full national support and resources on their journey to Paris 2024, and now officially to Los Angeles 2028.
BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who had previously pledged to finalise the pair’s future before the Japan Open, has followed through on that promise.
“The discussions were very positive and we want the best for them”

A Strong Run of Form Strengthens Their Position
Despite contractual uncertainties in recent months, Pearly and Thinaah have remained focused and resilient, delivering consistent performances on the international stage. In the past few months alone.
Why Staying with BAM Matters
By remaining under BAM, Pearly-Thinaah will continue to benefit from the national body’s infrastructure, including elite coaching, recovery facilities, tournament planning, and psychological and nutritional support. With other top shuttlers occasionally opting to go independent, the decision to stay reflects their alignment with BAM’s long-term vision and Malaysia’s Olympic ambitions.
Moreover, their extension also ensures stability for Malaysia’s women’s doubles development pipeline, offering younger players a benchmark to look up to while keeping public attention firmly on the women’s game.
Looking ahead to LA 2028
The road to Los Angeles will not be without challenges, but Pearly-Thinaah’s renewed commitment sends a strong message, not just about loyalty and ambition, but also about unity in purpose. For BAM, its a win. For fans, its a reason to hope. And for Malaysian badminton, its a sign that the dream of Olympic gold remains very much alive, with Pearly and Thinaah right at the heart of it.
