After months of speculation, Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M.Thinaah have officially reaffirmed their commitment to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), a move hailed as a major boost to the country’s women’s doubles future.
The world No.3 duo signed a new four-year contract with BAM on Thursday, ending a seven-month-long uncertainty. The duo was debating whether they would continue under the national body or turn independent. Their decision, coming just days before the Japan Open, has sparked renewed optimism within the Malaysian badminton scene.
A Win Beyond the Court
National coach Rosman Razak described the pair’s renewed commitment as ‘invaluable’ not only for their own career trajectory but for the broader development of women’s doubles in the country. During a media session at Academy Badminton Malaysia, he said,
“Pearly-Thinaah’s continued presence in the squad will be a huge help, especially for their teammates and the junior pairs who see them as role models.”
He emphasised that the pair’s professionalism, work ethic, and resilience have made them icons within the squad, setting a standard for younger players such as world No.42 Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee and World Junior 2024 runners-up Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu (No.214).

“They’re a great example, not just in terms of skills, but also their professionalism and commitment. That’s not easy to replicate. The younger players know they have a world-class pair to look up to, and that the women’s doubles department has a future.”
Mentorship in Action
Rosman noted that while Carmen-Xin Yee and Sofea-Zi Yu have yet to capture major titles, having Pearly and Thinaah around in training provides a unique edge, sparring opportunities that are hard to replicate outside national structures.
Despite the prolonged contract negotiations, Rosman confirmed that the pair remained focused and consistent in their training and tournament commitments.

“There hasn’t been any major change. They’ve stayed committed in training and continued preparing for tournaments as usual. We had four weeks to prepare for the Japan Open, and we’ve made the necessary adjustments. Hopefully, they can perform well next week.”
Momentum Heading into Major Tournaments
Even amidst the contract, Pearly-Thinaah delivered a impressive results in recent months, champions at the Thailand Open, runners-up at the Indonesia Open, semi-finalist at the Malaysia Masters, and quarter-finalist in Singapore.
With the contract saga finally behind them, the pair will head to Tokyo next week for the Japan Open (15th-20th July) in strong form, before setting their sights on the season’s biggest prize, the World Championships in Paris (25th-31st August).

Their commitments also secures their place in BAM’s long-term roadmap leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, signalling Malaysia’s continued pursuit of a historic women’s doubles medal.
The decision to stay with BAM is more than just a contract renewal, it represents a vote of confidence in the national system, and a message to rising stars in the pipeline, that the journey to the top is possible with structure, discipline, and the right environment.
With Pearly and Thinaah at the helm, the future of Malaysian women;s doubles badminton is not only secure, its rising.
