Rubini Sambanthan is no stranger to style or the spotlight. Crowned Miss International Malaysia 2014, and widely recognized as Malaysia’s representative on Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 6, the 33-year-old has gracefully evolved from pageants and runaways to the screen, most recently making her lead acting debut in the Tamil series Aadhira. But beyond the glitz and glamour, Rubini brings a refreshing blend of bold fashion sense and grounded self-awareness that makes her stand out.
In the latest edition of Avant Guard, a series that explores the personal style codes of notable personalities in Grazia, Rubini opens up about everything from fashion regrets to her wardrobe essentials and even what song gets her in the mood to get ready.
A Strong First Step

When Rubini walked into the MOG Eyewear event, she turned heads effortlessly. Clad in black lace-up boots, a leather rider jacket, and darker shades, her look screamed confidence with an edge. But beneath the fierce exterior lies a colorful and playful spirit, quite literally, as she excitedly admits that colorful socks are one of the fashion items she can’t leave the house without.
Learning From Fashion Missteps
One of her biggest regrets is a pageant-era outfit that missed the mark. “A sponsor insisted I wear an all-white outfit paired with sky-high stiletto heels and heavy ashen make up. I looked like a walking mannequin”.
It was a lesson in trusting her instincts, something she now sticks to.
Wishlist, Icons, and Styling Dreams
Rubini’s current fashion wishlist includes oversized grey blazer sets from Shals, raw Japanese denim from Shinzo, and a blue sweater from Dior Men, highlighting her love for menswear-inspired pieces. Her first luxury buy was a pair of limited-edition Dr. Martens boots she’s proudly owned for five years.

As for dream collaborations, Rubini sets her sights high: Pedro Pascal’s stylist, Beat Bolliger.
“For now, anyone who’s working with Pedro Pascal. I’m obsessed with the Vanity Fair cover that featured him—from the styling to the charm he has with him. So, I’d like to work with Beat Bolliger.”
Her ultimate fashion icon is a tie between Michele Lamy and the late Malaysian fashion figure Abang Jiman. And if she had to wear one brand for life, without hesitation, it’s Yohji Yamamoto.

Rubini’s Unfiltered Opinions
Never one to shy away from honesty, Rubini is vocal about the trends she thinks need to go.
“People will hate me for saying this, but wearing leggings as trousers with visible camel toe needs to go.”
She also calls out the insensitive use of sacred symbols in fashion, urging for more respect in how culture is portrayed. She does, however, love pushing boundaries with batik.

“I don’t find it controversial to fuse batik with contemporary silhouettes, or to pair it with Indian jewelery. I think it makes a beautiful and bold style statement.”
Everyday Style and Sentimental Picks
On lazy days, you’ll find Rubini in a cozy sweater and her trusty boots. Her recent purchase was a second pair of Adidas Samba sneakers. And the one item she hopes to pass down is her thrifted Prada vest.
Despite her sharp fashion sense, Rubini admits she has no big regrets.

“I can’t think of any because I consider myself a careful shopper. I wouldn’t buy something if I didn’t fancy it.”
And when it comes to get dressed up, her go-to playlist includes ‘Feel Good Inc by Gorilla’,‘Gallowdance by Lebanon Hanover’ and ‘Staying Alive by the Bee Gees’.

With a fashion personality that’s equal parts fearless and thoughtful, Rubini continues to inspire both on and off the runaway. Whether she’s making bold fashion statements or sharing thrift finds, she proves that true style goes far beyond trends, it’s about owning your story.
