Here’s Why Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie Has Fans Counting Down the Days

The highly anticipated Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, is set to storm the big screens on 14 August 2025. Produced by Sun Pictures and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film has already generated immense buzz, with expectations soaring among fans and movie enthusiasts alike. In Malaysia, Malik Streams has secured the distribution rights for Coolie, further fueling excitement for its release. But what exactly are the factors driving this unparalleled anticipation?

1. A Golden Jubilee Milestone for the Superstar

Coolie holds a special place in the hearts of fans as it coincides with the grand celebration of 50 years of Rajinism. Superstar Rajinikanth made his acting debut in 1975 with Apoorva Raagangal, which was released on 15 August 1975. Now, after five decades of reigning supreme in Kollywood, his 171st film is set to hit the screens on 14 August 2025 — just a day before the golden jubilee of his remarkable journey. This milestone has fans all the more eager to celebrate Coolie in grand style.

2. The Eternal Superstar Effect

Superstar Rajinikanth himself is reason enough for fans to flock to the cinemas. His inimitable style, magnetic charm, and unmatched charisma never fail to captivate audiences. Even at the age of 75, he continues to push boundaries, giving his all to deliver maximum entertainment. His signature mannerisms remain timeless, and the prospect of witnessing his larger-than-life presence on the big screen is, in itself, a thrilling experience for fans.

3. The First Collaboration of Lokesh and Rajini

Lokesh Kanagaraj is one of the most successful directors in the industry, consistently delivering box-office hits and earning a loyal fanbase of his own. Known for his distinctive filmmaking style, he has created the popular Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), where each film is cleverly connected to another. Coolie marks the first-ever collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Superstar Rajinikanth — a pairing of two powerhouses in Tamil cinema. With Lokesh’s masterful storytelling and Rajinikanth’s unmatched screen presence, fans are eagerly anticipating the electrifying outcome of this monumental collaboration.

4.  A Standalone Story or Part of the LCU?

As many know, Lokesh Kanagaraj is renowned for his signature Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) style, with most of his previous films falling within this interconnected universe. The LCU already features some of the biggest stars in Tamil cinema, including Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Karthi, and Suriya. However, Lokesh has previously stated that Coolie will be a standalone film, focusing purely on its own story without any ties to his earlier works. Still, fans remain intrigued — and a little skeptical — wondering whether it will truly be independent or if it might secretly connect to the LCU after all.

5. An Ensemble Cast That Elevates Excitement

Coolie boasts an impressive ensemble cast that has only amplified the excitement surrounding the film. Superstar Rajinikanth leads as Deva, while Nagarjuna takes on the role of Simon. Sathyaraj appears as Rajasekar, Upendra plays Kaleesha, Shruti Haasan portrays Preethi, and Soubin Shahir steps into the role of Dayal. Adding to the buzz, it was recently confirmed that Aamir Khan will make a special appearance as Dahaa. This powerhouse lineup of talent has significantly heightened anticipation for the movie.

6. A Nostalgic Thalapathi Reference

In an unexpected twist, the Coolie 100-day countdown teaser featured a frame strikingly similar to one of Rajinikanth’s most iconic moments from Thalapathi. Released in 1991, Thalapathi is remembered for its poignant and visually stunning sunset scene, where the lead characters part ways, accompanied by Ilaiyaraaja’s unforgettable background score — a moment etched in the hearts of fans for decades. Spotting what appears to be a recreation of this beloved scene in the teaser sent fans into a frenzy. Adding to the excitement, director Lokesh Kanagaraj has often expressed in numerous interviews that Thalapathi is one of his favourite Rajinikanth films. This nostalgic nod has only raised expectations for Coolie even higher.

7. An ‘A’ Certificate After 36 Years

Unusually for Rajinikanth, whose fan base spans all age groups, his upcoming action entertainer Coolie has been awarded an ‘A’ certificate after completing censorship formalities. While 20 of Rajinikanth’s films have received an ‘A’ rating over the years, the last time a Superstar film carried this classification was 36 years ago — with Siva in 1989. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has previously stated that he makes no compromises when it comes to portraying violence in his films. With this in mind, Rajinikanth’s fans are eagerly anticipating what Lokesh has crafted for Coolie, curious to see the unique blend of his gritty filmmaking style with the Superstar’s larger-than-life screen presence.

8. Anirudh’s Musical Powerhouse

Anirudh Ravichander serves as the music composer for Coolie, bringing his signature energy and flair to the film’s soundtrack. Known as one of the most sensational music directors in the industry, Anirudh has consistently delivered chart-topping songs and powerful background scores. A devoted fan of Rajinikanth, he is known to go the extra mile when working on Thalaivar’s films, ensuring the music amplifies the Superstar’s larger-than-life presence on screen. The already released tracks, “Chikitu” and “Powerhouse,” have set the stage ablaze with their electrifying beats, raising expectations even higher. With Anirudh at the helm, both the songs and background score are poised to be among the standout successes of Coolie.

9. A Trailer That Ignites Anticipation

The much-anticipated Coolie trailer was released just three days ago and has since taken social media by storm, garnering massive attention and praise. Fiery, intense, and visually striking, the trailer has significantly heightened excitement and anticipation for the film. Interestingly, it reveals very little about the plot, keeping the mystery intact while fueling curiosity.

One of the standout moments for fans was witnessing the “Superstar Rajini” title card appear in red for the very first time. For decades, this iconic title card has always been shown in blue, making the transition from blue to red in the trailer a striking and symbolic change. With just nine days to go until Coolie hits the big screens, the trailer has only amplified the hype, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience.

10. Malik Streams Corporation’s Grand Malaysian Release

With Coolie being distributed in Malaysia by Malik Streams Corporation — the pioneer in Tamil film distribution — audiences can expect a truly grand release. Malik Streams has been going all out with large-scale promotions for the film. Notably, the trailer, which was released on 2nd August, was also premiered on the big screen at GSC NU Sentral.

In an unprecedented move for a Tamil film in Malaysia, Malik Streams hosted the country’s largest hot-air balloon launch at Dataran Merdeka last Sunday, drawing immense public attention. Advance bookings are now open at TGV Cinemas and LFS, further fueling the excitement. With such extensive promotions, Malik Streams is all set to deliver one of the biggest Tamil film releases Malaysia has ever seen.

Coolie is shaping up to be more than just a film — it’s a celebration of a golden legacy, a historic collaboration, and the boundless love fans have for Superstar Rajinikanth. As the clock ticks down to 14 August 2025, fans worldwide are ready to witness history unfold on the big screen. Coolie isn’t just a movie — it’s an event, a milestone, and a moment fans will remember for years to come.
