Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim underscored the unique power of sports to unify Malaysians across ethnic, cultural, and political lines, describing it as a potent platform that brings people together in ways politics often fails to do.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Olympic House, which will serve as the future headquarters of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Malaysia, Datuk Anwar said sports naturally foster shared aspirations and collective pride, regardless of race or background.

“Whether in football or badminton, everyone is gathered together and wants one thing – for their team to win. It doesn’t matter whether they are Malay or Chinese, Dayak or Indian. They are Malaysian,” he said.
The event was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) President Tan Sri Norza Zakaria, as dignitaries and sports stakeholders gathered to mark what Datuk Anwar called a ‘monumental step forward’ for Malaysian sports development.
Sports as a Symbol of Unity
Datuk Anwar’s remarks aligns with his previous statements on the role of sports in fostering national cohesion. In June 2023, he emphasised that the team spirit developed through sports had the potential to bridge urban and rural divides, while also helping Malaysians look beyond ethnic and religious differences.

Reiterating that point, the prime minister contrasted the unity seen in stadiums with the often combative tone of political discourse.
He expressed hope that the values embodied in sports, discipline, resilience, mutual respect and teamwork, can eventually inform how Malaysians engage in other spheres of public life.
Olympic House: A Vision for the Future
Turning to the significance of the Olympic House project, Datuk Anwar said the RM93 million complex represents more than just bricks and mortar, it symbolises a long-term investment in Malaysia’s youth and spotting future.

He encouraged those within the sports to actively contribute ideas, feedback and even criticism to help improve the national sports ecosystem.
More Than a Headquarters
As the ceremony concluded, Datuk Anwar reiterated that the Olympics house should be viewed as a living symbol of unity, progress and shared purpose
“What makes this project even more meaningful is the way it’s being shaped. It will be a building that does not just serve people but also honours the environment at the same time.”
With the groundbreaking now laid, the Olympic House stands poised to become a landmark of Malaysia’s sporting ambition, and a hopeful reminder of the power of unity in diversity.
