Daily commuters using the SMART Tunnel can now enjoy unlimited travel for a month at a flat rate RM68, thanks to the newly launched Merdeka Unlimited Travel Pass by Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Berhad (ALR).
The pass, valid from 16th August to 16th September, was unveiled in conjunction with Malaysia’s 68th National Day, and 15th Malaysia Day. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who officiated the launch of the SMART Management and Tunnel Operations Complex yesterday, said the initiative could help regular users save up to RM64 monthly compared with the average toll expenditure of RM132.

“This initiative shows how infrastructure players can take proactive steps to help people manage the rising cost of living, particularly in urban areas. It also strengthens public trust in the highway industry and reflects Malaysia Madani’s emphasis on balancing economic growth with social justice, underpinned by values of respect and compassion,” said Datuk Seri Alexander.
On average, commuters make around 44 trips through the SMART Tunnel each month, paying RM3 per trip. The Merdeka Unlimited Travel Pass not only offers significant savings but also provides quick access to the city centre, serving an estimated 19,000 vehicles daily.

Datuk Seri Alexander highlighted that the SMART Tunnel, the worlds only dual-function tunnel combining traffic and floodwater management, remains one of Malaysia’s most notable engineering feats. It has garnered international accolades, including the United Nations Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, the British Construction Industry Award and the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, and has listed by CNN among the ‘Most Impressive Tunnels in the World’.
Also present at the launch were Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Sazali Harun and ALR group chief executive officer Muhammad Nizam Alias. Datuk Seri Alexander added that there would be no free toll for National Day, as exemptions are reserved for certain one-day festive occasions.
