What began as a simple business decision has blossomed into a symbol of racial unity in Johor. A durian stall run by three friends, Malay, Chinese, and Indian has captured the hearts of locals and international visitors alike, proving that the ‘king of fruits’ can also be the king of friendship.
About 10 years ago, S.Lognathan (35), Mohd Nasir Majnun and Chew Pei Chuan (42), worked together as car repossessors. When they each decided to pursue the durian trade, they set up individual stalls in Batu Pahat. But competition soon became tough, as their stalls were located close to one another.
Mohd Nasir told Bernama, that the situation led them to sit down and agree to set up a joint venture under the name ‘Rumah Buah’. It then turned into a favorite spot to many.

“It turned out to be a blessing as our stall has since become a favorite spot for customers of all races.”
Chew Pei added that their collaboration not only eased competition but also expanded their reach to new markets.
“Before this, only locals bought from me. Now, we have customers from Singapore, Thailand and even China. They want to taste Musang King and see for themselves how we work together. Our story went viral during the Movement Control Order, when we sold durians online and personally delivered them to customers”, he said.

Today, Rumah Buah sells up to three tonnes of durian daily, offering popular varieties such as Musang King, Kampung, Kahwin, IOI, Black Thorn and D13.
For Lognanthan, fondly known as Uda, the friendship and teamwork extend beyond business and durian season. The trio also sells pineapples, dragon fruit, and fresh coconut water sourced from local farmers. More importantly, they give back to the community.
“We also carry out charitable activities, especially during festive seasons, by sharing part of our earnings with the underprivileged. Every Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Deepavali, we make sure to contribute to those in need,” said Lognathan.
During Ramadan, the three friends also cook and distribute free bubur lambuk to customers at their stall, reinforcing their commitment to community spirit.
Just like durian flesh that binds together within a thorny husk, the bond between the three friends, Mohd Nasir, Chew Pei and Lognathan has grown stronger with time. What started as a way to survive in a competitive market has now become an enduring symbol of friendship and racial harmony.
