Jelutong MP RSN Rayer has proposed that Thirukkural be introduced as a school subject to help instil discipline and moral values among students.
He said the initiative could serve as a long-term approach to address the rising number of disciplinary cases in schools, which have affected not only students but also teachers and parents.

As public concern over student behaviour grows, some have suggested reintroducing caning in schools under strict guidelines to teach students about the consequences of misconduct. However, Rayer emphasized that beyond punishment, it is equally important to nurture good moral values to prevent such issues from occurring in the first place.
Rayer added that, alongside Thirukkural, Confucianism—a system of ethics and philosophy originating in ancient China—could also be included in the curriculum.
He stressed that these teachings should not be limited to Tamil and Chinese schools, but should also be introduced in national schools, as their universal moral principles can benefit all students regardless of background.
