The long-awaited Electric Train Service (ETS) extension to Johor Bahru is set to begin operation by mid-December, marking a major milestone in Malaysia’s intercity rail development. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that the new service known as ETS3 will connect Johor Bahru to the west coast rail network for the first time.
The ETS southern expansion represents the final phase of the intercity electric train projects, extending the line beyond Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, through Segamat, Labis, Kluang and Kulai before reaching Johor Bahru Sentral Station. Once launched, the route will complete the west coast corridor, enhancing public transport accessibility across Peninsular Malaysia.
Anthony Loke said the ministry is finalizing technical preparations and will announce the official launch date and ticket prices soon. “This is an additional mode of transport in Johor, and I am confident it can also help the tourism sector in Johor, especially in secondary and small towns like Segamat, Labis, Kluang, and Kulai.

The introduction of ETS3 comes at a strategic time, ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026, and Visit Johor 2026 campaigns. The high-speed intercity rail connection is expected to attract both domestic and international travelers, providing a comfortable and efficient alternative to road transport.
The transport Ministry said the project reflects the government’s continued efforts to modernize the national railway network, reduce congestion on highways, and promote sustainable travel options.
With the new line set to begin service in the coming weeks, Johor Bahru is poised to become a new southern hub for rail connectivity, linking Malaysians from the north to the south through a single, continuous ETS network.
