At 85, most people would want to be settling comfortably into retirement, but Datuk Victor Isaacs chose a different path. The seasoned lawyer has just achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) proving that passion for knowledge truly knows no age limit.

After six years of dedication and research, Victor’s theses explored one of the most complex and ethically charged issues in modern law, the role of professionals in drafting legislation related to euthanasia in Malaysia. His work not only bridged legal and medical perspectives but also highlighted the need for compassionate end-of-life care in the country.

In his research, Victor promised the establishment of a palliative care facility at UniSZA to ensure that terminally ill patience receive continuous and dignified support, even after hospital treatment ends. “I recommended that UniSZA set up a palliative care home on campus to support these patients”, he said after receiving his scroll at the university’s convocation ceremony.

Victor’s academic journey was not without personal trials. Six years ago, he lost his wife, the same year he began his PhD. Yet, instead of halting his pursuit, the loss became his motivation to keep going. “Knowledge has always been part of who I am. Losing my wife was heartbreaking, but it only strengthened my resolve to keep learning”, he shared.

His perseverance stands as an inspiring message to Malaysians young and old, that learning is not bound by time, and growth can continue well into one’s later years.

Victor’s achievement was one of the highlights of UniSZA’s convocation ceremony, which also celebrated other lifelong learners, including 59 year old Dr Zamri Chik. Having already completed two PhDs in education, Zamri is now preparing to pursue his third, this time in political science.

Both Victor and Zamri embody the spirit of lifelong learning, a testament to how education remains a journey of the heart and mind, not just the young. Their stories are a powerful reminder that it’s never to late to learn, grow, and inspire.
