Superstar Rajinikanth will be honoured at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) for completing 50 remarkable years in cinema. The festival, set to take place in Goa from 20th November to 28th November 2025, will celebrate the actor’s enduring legacy and unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema.
Rajinikanth who made his debut on 15th August 1975 in K.Balanchandar’s Apoorva Raagangal, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential figures in global cinema. Portraying the character Pandiyan in the film, he instantly captured audiences with his charisma and distinct style, qualities that would come to define his five-decade-long career.
Since that breakthrough, Rajinikanth has starred in over 170 films across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and other languages, shaping popular culture in ways few others have achieved. His most recent outing, Coolie (2025) directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, released on 14th August this year and brought together an ensemble cast featuring Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan. The film also marked a reunion between Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj nearly four decades after their collaboration in Mr Bharath (1986).
The IFFI honours will be presented to Rajinikanth at the festival’s closing ceremony on 28th November celebrating his 50-year journey that continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers. His recognition comes alongside a host of new initiatives that marks IFFIs expanding global reach, including the world’s first AI Film Festival and a dedicated Hackathon exploring the future of cinema and technology.
In a year that also celebrates centenary tributes to filmmakers such as Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, Ritwik Ghatak and Bhupen Hazarika, Rajinikanth’s milestone adds a historic dimension to the festival. The celebration coincides with the government’s continued push for inclusion in the arts, with over 50 women filmmakers participating and more than 240 films from 81 countries being screened.

Even as Rajinikanth marks half a century in film, the Superstar shows no signs of slowing down. His next project, Thalaivar 173, backed by Kamal Haasan and directed by Sundar C, will bring together two titans of Tamil cinema after 44 years.
From his debut in Apoorva Raagangal to his latest cinematic milestone, Rajinikanth’s journey remains a story of perseverance, reinvention and larger than life artistry, one that continues to define the heart of Indian cinema.
