Mogesh Sababathy, a news presenter at BERNAMA TV has made history as the first journalist in Malaysia to earn a PhD in immunology. He received his doctorate from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and was recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) from his remarkable achievement.

Mogesh’s interest in immunology and stem-cell research began from a personal experience. Years ago, his father suffered a serious accident and doctors recommended stem-cell therapy as part of the treatment. However, the high cost and limited research in the field made it difficult to access. Inspired by this, Mogesh decided to pursue scientific research to make advanced medical treatments more accessible and beneficial for others. His PhD focused on stem-cell research, particularly studying lung inflammation.

Mogesh joined BERNAMA in 2022. He first appeared as a guest on a programme discussing climate change and environmental issues. Impressed by his knowledge and communication skills, the English desk team invited him to try news reading. After several months of training, he began appearing on screen and now anchors weekend news including international news segments.

He believes his work in journalism complements his scientific research. By communicating complex scientific concepts in simple language, he can help the public better understand important health and science issues.

Mogesh expressed hope that his achievement would inspire young people, especially from minority communities, to pursue multiple interests and careers. He emphasized that with passion and perseverance, it is possible to excel in both science and journalism.
