With the release of Vaa Vaathiyaar just days away, actor Krithi Shetty says she hopes the film can bridge a generational gap and reintroduce one of Tamil cinema’s most iconic figures, MG Ramachandran to today’s youth. The Nalan Kumarasay directorial, led by Karthi, centres on a protagonist who worships MGR’s ideals, charisma, and larger-than-life screen presence.
Krithi, who plays the female lead, shared that her own understanding of the late actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister grew while working on the film,
“I’ve only ever heard positive things about MGR sir. He was such a big personality that, ideally, you would expect many different versions of who he was. But everything I’ve heard highlights how charitable he was, and that really impressed me”.

The actor believes the film holds cultural value beyond its entertainment quotient, “Our generation, especially Gen Z kids, knows very little about his aura and the kind of person he was. That’s why this film feels important. It can show younger audiences who he really was and hopefully influence them in a good way. For MGR fans, the film will be a celebration. For those who don’t know much about him, it will serve as a reintroduction.”
A Tribute to MGR Through Karthi’s Character
Vaa Vaathiyaar follows Karthi as a passionate MGR admirer, a trait inherited from his father, played by veteran actor Rajkiran. The trailer suggests a spirited storyline: a boy who grows up celebrating MGR films in theatres becomes a police officer with his own unconventional approach to justice, often landing himself in trouble. The film also stars Anandaraj, GM Sundar, and Shilpa Manjunath in important roles.
Produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under the Studio Green banner, the film boasts a strong technical team, including cinematographer George C Williams, editor Vetre Krishnan, music composer Santhosh Narayanan and art director DRK Kiran.
A Much-Awaited Release
The nostalgic yet socially grounded drama is set to hit theatres on 12th December. With its blend of mass action, emotional storytelling and a heartfelt tribute to a legendary figure, Vaa Vaathiyaar is expected to resonate with both MGR fans and new-age audiences discovering his legacy for the first time.
