Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has revealed that the upcoming 2027 preschool curriculum will include a specific provision for parents to engage in reading activities with their children. This new component is designed to encourage active participation by parents in their children’s early learning journey.
Speaking at a Kota Buku event in Cyberjaya, Fadhlina explained that the education ministry is committed to fostering a reading culture from an early age. As part of this effort, schools will establish special spaces where parents and preschoolers can read together, allowing families to bond through shared literacy experiences.
According to Fadhlina, the initiative forms part of a larger plan to ensure the success of the revised preschool curriculum by strengthening parents’ involvement. She emphasised that parents play an important role in supporting literacy development at home, and that these dedicated reading areas will help create structured opportunities for interaction between caregivers and children.

The minister noted that while digital tools and technologies have expanded the ways children can learn, traditional book reading continues to be vital in nurturing understanding and critical thinking skills. She highlighted that national reading programmes such as Nilam (Nadi Ilmu Amalan Membaca)will continue to be promoted to reinforce reading habits among students.
The minister reiterated the importance of cultivating a strong reading culture at an early age as part of broader reforms to the national education system. These efforts are aimed at producing children with stronger literacy foundations and the ability to think deeply and critically as they progress through their school years.
