Malaysia ended the Thailand SEA Games 2025 with renewed pride, officially closing the chapter on its disappointing 2023 outing in Cambodia. Despite early challenges, including the last-minute relocation from Songkhla to Bangkok due to flooding, the national contingent delivered one of its strongest overseas campaigns.
Malaysia finished 4th overall, collecting 57 gold, 57 silver, and 117 bronze medals, for a total of 231 medals, surpassing the 200-medal target. It also marked Malaysia’s best SEA Games medal haul outside Kuala Lumpur, overtaking the 216 medal won in Korat 2007, and the nation’s best gold tally in six years.

The Games showcased a strong youth pipeline, with 39% of debutants and 43% of athletes under 21 winning medals. Malaysian athletes also broke six SEA Games records and 13 national records across athletics, swimming, shooting, and cycling.
Athletics emerged as the most successful sport highlighted by Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin’s 7th straight discus gold and Grace Wong’s record breaking hammer throw. Squash swept all golds, track cycling impressed, hockey teams retained dominance, and sepak takraw ended a 34-year gold doubt. Shooting contributed three golds and multiple records, while muaythai, judo and wushu delivered standout results.
With Malaysia set to host the 2027 SEA Games, officials say this momentum strengthens confidence for an even stronger performance on home soil.
