The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has shown strong support for the implementation of the Online Safety Act 2025 (ONSA 2025). This new legal framework aims to enhance user safety and create a safer digital environment in the country. The law is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Inspector- General of Police, Dato Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said PDRM recognizes that online crime threats are becoming increasingly serious and have a direct impact on community well-being. According to PDRM records, Malaysians suffered losses totalling RM2.77 billion due to online scam crimes from January 2023 to November 2025. Within the same period, 688 cases of online child sexual exploitation were recorded from January 2021 to November 2025, and cases related to Child Sexual Abuse Material totaled 351 from January 2021 to October 2025.

Mohd Khalid said the implementation of ONSA is an important step to ensure that digital platforms take responsibility for curbing the spread of harmful content, closing operational spaces for cybercriminals and strengthening actions against child exploitation. He added that ONSA will also help deter online fraud, identity abuse and extremist content.
He also stated that this approach aligns with the commitment to protect the public and ensure their safety in future cyberspace environments. PDRM will continue working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commision (MCMC), relevant ministries and digital platform providers to ensure cybercrime actions are carried out more swiftly and effectively.
