Malaysian squash stars Sivasangari Subramaniam and Eain Yow Ng delivered thrilling performances at the Sprott Tournament of Champions 2026 presented by Crowd Street, held at the iconic Grand Central Terminal, with Sivasangari booking her first-ever quarter-final appearance and Ng pushing a former World No.1 to the limit.

Sivasangari Stages Stunning Comeback

World No.6 Sivasangari overcame a two-game deficit to defeat Amanda Sobhy 3-2 in a tense 55-minute battle, winning 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4. Sobhy, playing in front of her home crowd, had looked on course for victory after storming to a 2-0 lead, but Sivasangari’s resilience and tactical brilliance turned the match in her favour.

Reflecting on her performance, Sivasangari said “I feel proud with how I fought today. I was 2-0 down and even in the third I was down. I tried to fight each point and not give it up easily. Even if I lost, I wanted to stay on court and fight. By doing that, I managed to sneak the third. The fourth was close as well, and I know Amanda was feeling it too. I’m happy to be through.”

The victory marks Sivasangari’s maiden quarter-final appearance at the prestigious New York tournament. She will next face US No.1 Olivia Weaver, who advanced in straight games against Marina Stefanoni. Egyptian teenagers Amina Orfi and Fayrouz Aboelkheir also progressed to the quarter-finals with dominant 3-0 wins.

Eain Yow Ng Pushes ElShorbagy to the Limit

In the men’s draw, Eain Yow Ng came agonizingly close to a breakthrough, racing into a two-game lead over Mohamed ElShorbagy. However, the three-time Tournament of Champions champion displayed his trademark composure and stamina, mounting a comeback to secure a 3-2 victory after an 81-minute marathon, winning 4-11, 13-15, 11-9, 11-6, 11-7.

ElShorbagy, who recently became the most successful player on the PSA Squash Tour with 589 career wins, praised the challenge, “To win a match like that in Grand Central, I’m so proud of that performance. When I was 2-0 down, I thought there’s no way I could come back, but I challenged myself and pushed through. I’m so, so happy.”

Despite the loss, Ng impressed with his physicality and tactical awareness, pushing one of the sport’s greats to the edge. ElShorbagy will face Diego Elias in the quarter-finals, after the Peruvian defeated Greg Lobban 3-0. Victor Crouin and Paul Coll also advanced with straight-game victories.

The quarter-finals of the Sprott Tournament of Champions 2026 begin on Monday, January 26, from 5:00pm (GMT-5) in New York. Fans can watch all matches live on SQUASHTV and through PSA’s broadcast partners.
