As chants echo and kavadi bearers make their sacred ascent at Batu Caves, another powerful act of devotion is unfolding at the foot of the iconic limestone hill, blood donation. In conjunction with Thaipusam 2026, Malaysians from all walks of life have come together for a 36-hour blood donation drive, transforming the annual religious celebration into a moment of collective compassion.
Organized by the Ministry of Health’s National Blood Centre (PDN), the campaign is taking place under the MRR2 flyover, directly in front of the Batu Caves temple entrance in Gombak, Selangor. Running from 31st January to 2nd February, the initiative aims to collect 2,200 bags of blood to help replenish critically low hospital supplies across the Klang Valley.

As of 2PM on 1st February, the response has been encouraging. PDN announced that 1,006 blood bags have already been collected nearly halfway to the target, with donors continuing to arrive steadily throughout the day.
Sharing updates via it’s official Facebook page, PDN welcomed participation from everyone, regardless of race or religion, underscoring the inclusive spirit of the campaign. The collected blood will be processed and distributed to hospitals throughout the Klang Valley, where demand remains consistently high.

In a separate update, PDN expressed gratitude to those who have already stepped forward, offering a behind-the-scenes look at blood bags being processed in their laboratory. According to the centre, blood cell separation is currently underway before the supply is safely stored and set to hospitals in need.
With blood stock levels still low, PDN continues to urge the public to donate. “Demand for blood at hospitals continue to rise and must remain adequate at all times,” the centre said, calling on Malaysians to help ensure a stable supply during this critical period.

For those still hoping to contribute, the blood donation drive remains open during the following hours:
1st February was until 11PM and today 2nd February is from 8AM to 2PM. This Thaipusam, beyond acts of penance and prayer, the spirit of giving is flowing strong, one donation at a time.
