Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to inclusivity and support for the Hindu community, announcing key developments related to the proposed motorised lift project at the Thanneermalai Shree Balathandayuthapani temple along Jalan Kebun Bunga.
Speaking at the Thaipusam 2026 celebration at the temple compound, Chow revealed that the company appointed to undertake the project has completed a feasibility study for the proposed people mover system. The study, which outlines three possible design options, has since been presented to the Penang Hindu Endowments Broad (LWHPP) for further evaluation.

The proposed motorised lift aims to improve accessibility to the historic hilltop temple, which sits at an elevation of over 100 metres, particularly benefiting senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The project was first announced during last year’s Thaipusam celebration as part of broader efforts announced during last year’s Thaipusam celebration as part of broader efforts to enhance inclusivity at religious and heritage sites across the state.
Chow noted that Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, the company appointed through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the Bukit Bendera cable car project, had previously expressed interest in developing the lift system at the temple. The project is estimated to cost between RM4 million and RM6 million.
The Thaipusam event was also marked by financial support from the state government. Chow announced a RM240,000 contribution to Kuil Thanneermalai Shree Balathandayuthapani, recognising the successful organisation of Thaipusam in Penang for over 240 years. He added that the state’s long-term commitment to the Hindu community remains strong, with annual grants totaling RM2 million channeled to LWHPP to support temple administration and community initiatives.

Several dignitaries were presented at the celebration, including Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development and Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, Deputy Minister of National Unity R. Yuvaneswaran, Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple chairman K. KUmarathiraviam Kasinathan, and LWHPP chairman RSN Rayer.
Thaipusam 2026 in Penang drew a massive turnout, with more than one million Hindu devotees, alongside domestic and international tourist, witnessing the procession of the golden chariot and the silver chariot to the temple. The celebration, which began yesterday, once again underscored Penang’s role as a key spiritual and cultural hub for Thaipusam in Malaysia.
With the feasibility study now completed, the proposed lift project marks a significant step towards making one of Penang’s most revered temples more accessible, reflecting the state government’s broader vision of inclusivity while preserving cultural and religious heritage.
