World Cancer Day, observed on 4 February each year, serves as a global reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection and compassion in the fight against cancer. While healthcare organisations, advocacy groups and various agencies continue to lead efforts in education and prevention, the role of entertainment in shaping public awareness cannot be overlooked.
In conjunction with World Cancer Day, Tamil cinema too has, at times, reflected the realities of cancer through powerful scenes and storylines. Several films have woven the illness into their narratives, using emotion, empathy and storytelling to highlight the impact of cancer on individuals, families and relationships.
Varisu (2023)
Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, Varisu is a family drama that highlights the importance of preserving family bonds, no matter the challenges faced. The film stars Thalapathy Vijay, Sarathkumar, Rashmika Mandanna, alongside an ensemble cast.
Sarathkumar plays the role of a powerful business tycoon who is diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. At this critical point in his life, the relationship between him and his sons is strained, marked by emotional distance and unresolved conflicts. However, the youngest son, portrayed by Thalapathy Vijay, learns about his father’s illness and steps forward to restore unity within the family.

Taking charge of his father’s company, he strives to reform the business while mending broken relationships. This journey is not without obstacles, as tensions arise between him and his elder brothers. As the story unfolds, secrets come to light, emotions run high, and the family is ultimately forced to confront the reality of their father’s condition, leading them towards reconciliation and understanding.
Nitham Oru Vaanam (2022)
The movie follows Arjun, a man with OCD, who becomes intrigued by two real-life stories he happens to read, both of which end abruptly, leaving him curious about the fates of the people involved. Determined to uncover the truth, Arjun embarks on a journey to find the real-life characters behind these stories.
One of these stories revolves around Mathiavadani, known as Mathi, and Prabhakaran, or Prabha. Mathi, a free-spirited young woman who dreams of a love marriage, runs away the night before her wedding. During her escape, she encounters Prabha, who is struggling with heartbreak and has even consumed poison. She rushes him to the hospital, only for her father to arrive there searching for her. In a surprising twist, her father asks Prabha to tie the wedding thread around Mathi’s neck. But just as he is about to do so, Mathi collapses, bleeding from her nose, the story ends abruptly, leaving readers in suspense.

Arjun, determined to know the truth, tracks them down and discovers that Mathi and Prabha are indeed still together. The twist: their happiness faces a new challenge when Mathi is diagnosed with cancer, showing that life’s struggles continue even after seemingly happy endings.
Kolamaavu Kokila (2018)
The story revolves around a mother, portrayed by Saranya Ponvannan, who is diagnosed with cancer, plunging her family into emotional and financial turmoil. Her elder daughter, played by Nayanthara, emerges as the film’s driving force. Determined to provide for her mother’s expensive medical treatment, she takes a bold and risky decision, entering the dangerous world of drug dealing.

The film follows her journey as she navigates moral dilemmas, encounters threats, and faces the harsh realities of her choices, all while trying to maintain the love and trust within her family. Though laced with dark humor and satirical moments, the movie’s core is deeply emotional, highlighting the lengths a daughter will go to protect and care for her mother. It explores themes of sacrifice, courage, and the resilience of familial bonds, making it both entertaining and profoundly moving.
Vasool Raja MBBS (2004)
One of Kamal Haasan’s most beloved films, Vasool Raja MBBS, perfectly blends comedy with drama, leaving a lasting emotional impact on its audience. In a memorable sequence, a character is diagnosed with cancer, confronting the inevitability of death. Kamal Haasan, playing his usual jovial and spirited self, helps the character embrace life in his final moments, taking him out, making him laugh, and encouraging him to cherish every bit of joy.

Even with the audience aware of the character’s fate, Kamal Haasan’s performance during the death scene strikes a deep emotional chord. His ability to balance humor, warmth, and sorrow brings tears while celebrating the preciousness of life, making it one of the film’s most unforgettable moments.
Idhayathai Thirudaathe (1989)
The film follows a carefree young man, played by Nagarjuna, who is suddenly diagnosed with leukemia. Devastated and demotivated, he retreats to his family’s vacation home in Ooty, unsure of how to face the days ahead.

There, he meets Girija, a spirited woman living with a heart condition. Despite her own health challenges, she embraces life with a playful and carefree attitude, always finding ways to make her family laugh. Inspired by her courage and zest for life, Nagarjuna not only learns to cherish every moment but also falls in love, discovering hope and happiness even in the shadow of illness.
While primarily made for entertainment, movies like these remind us of the importance of understanding cancer. Recognizing early symptoms, supporting loved ones diagnosed with the disease, and encouraging them to live life to the fullest are crucial lessons these films subtly teach through their stories.
