Thaipusam 2026 in Penang concluded on a highly positive note, earning widespread recognition as one of the cleanest, safest, and most orderly celebrations in the state’s history. The success was attributed to improved crowd management measures, strong multi-agency collaboration and the collective cooperation of devotees, volunteers and authorities.
The Penang Hindu Endowment Board (LWHNPP) confirmed that the three-day celebration was conducted peacefully and in a well-coordinated manner, with seamless cooperation between government agencies, enforcement bodies, temple management committees and the public.
Strong Security and Crowd Control Measures
Penang police also described Thaipusam 2026 as among the most successful and secure in recent years. A total of 1,280 policeman were deployed throughout the celebration, which saw an estimated 1.1 million devotees and visitors attending the event across Penang.
The introduction of designated movement routes around the temple played a crucial role in enhancing safety. According to LWHNPP deputy chairman Senator Dr A. Lingeshwaran, controlled entry routes reduced congestion on the temple steps by 27 per cent, significantly lowering the number of fainting and fall-related cases, especially during peak hours.

Efficient Medical Response and Zero Fatalities
The Penang State Health Department reported that 34 individuals received medical treatment on-site, with 10 patients referred to Penang Hospitals for further care. Ambulance teams accompanying the Golden Chariot responded to 7 cases, two of which required hospitalization. Notably, no fatalities were recorded throughout the entire celebration.
Dr Lingeshwaran added that the improved crowd flow allowed medical teams to respond more swiftly and effectively during emergencies, contributing to the overall safety of the event.

Cleanliness and Sustainability Take Centre Stage
Thaipusam 2026 was widely recognised as one of the cleanest celebrations ever held in Penang. A total of 127 tonnes of coconut waste were cleared, while approximately 225,000 litres of milk were disposed of safely at Pulau Burung, in accordance with public health and environmental guidelines.
“This demonstrates a strong collective commitment to cleanliness and sustainability,” Dr Lingeshwaran said, highlighting the growing awareness among devotees and organisers on responsible waste management during large-scale religious events.
Transport and Conflict Prevention Efforts
Transport initiatives also played a key role in easing crowd movement. Twelve Rapid Penang buses operated direct services from Jetty Terminal B to Jalan Burma between 31st January and 2nd February, serving 9,559 passengers and helping to reduce traffic congestion in the area,
In addition, a special task force established by LWHNPP successfully prevented kavadi clashes that had occurred in previous years, further ensuring a peaceful and harmonious celebration.
A Celebration Marked by Unity and Respect
Expressing his appreciation, Dr Lingeswaran thanked all agencies, volunteers, and members of the public for their cooperation and discipline.
”Penang has once again demonstrated unity, discipline, and mutual respect during a major religious celebration,” he said, adding that LWHNPP remains committed to continuously enhancing safety, crowd management, and welfare measures for future Thaipusam celebrations.
