Capt. Somaasundaram Sinnathamby, a marine officer from Penang, has successfully transitioned to a career in law after 33 years of service at sea. This career shift isn’t just a personal milestone; it is also a heartfelt tribute to his late father, who always dreamed of seeing his son pursue a legal career.

At the age of 58, Somaasundaram achieved that long-cherished dream by becoming an advocate. While maintaining a career as a mariner, he pursued his legal studies, navigating the challenges of balancing both roles. His journey was not without its difficulties, but Somaasundaram’s unwavering determination ultimately led him to being called to the Malaysian Bar as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court.

What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the fact that Somaasundaram shared this heartwarming moment with his son, Siva Prasad Somasundaram, who is already practicing law. On the same day, both father and son were officially welcomed into the legal profession, marking a significant milestone in their family legacy.

Siva Prasad took to LinkedIn to share his feelings about entering the law field alongside his father. Reflecting on their relationship, he recalled how, during his childhood, he was often intimidated by his father’s strict behaviour. However, he now recognizes that his father’s discipline played a crucial role in shaping his own character and work ethic. Siva expressed his excitement about starting this journey in law with his father, emphasizing the importance of family and mentorship in their shared path.

Somaasundaram’s story is a powerful reminder that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing one’s dreams. His journey demonstrates that with determination and discipline, it is never too late to chase after passions and make significant life changes.
