Seeram Ramakrishna, a prominent scientist renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of materials science, has recently accepted a prestigious position at Tsinghua University in China. Previously affiliated with the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he was based for many years, Seeram is often referred to as the “father of electrospinning,” a title highlighted by MIT Technology Review China due to his pioneering work in this area.
At Tsinghua University, Seeram has been appointed as a Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor, which represents the highest academic title. This recognition underscores his exceptional expertise and influence within the scientific community. Seeram earned his Master’s degree in Engineering from the esteemed Madras Institute of Technology in 1988. Following this, he joined the National University of Singapore in 1996, where he spent nearly three decades contributing significantly to research and education while holding multiple leadership roles.

The National University of Singapore holds a distinguished position, currently ranked 8th in the QS World University Rankings for 2026. Within the university, Seeram served as a professor of materials engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research team made notable advancements, particularly with the development of portable electrospinning devices. These innovative devices are designed to be compact and efficient, miniaturizing power systems to facilitate their use in emergency situations where traditional external power sources may not be available.
Seeram’s academic contributions are extensive, with over 2,000 peer-reviewed publications that have garnered more than 220,000 citations. This remarkable output has solidified his reputation as Singapore’s most cited scientist as of last year. His exceptional research and influence have also earned him additional titles where he has been recognized as one of the World’s Most Influential Minds by Thomson Reuters and has consistently been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate since 2014.

In 2023, Seeram was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a significant honor that reflects his standing in the international scientific community. The following year, he was awarded the Chinese Government Friendship Award, an esteemed recognition that represents the highest honor bestowed upon foreign experts contributing to China’s development. Seeram Ramakrishna’s career continues to inspire many in the fields of materials science and engineering.
