Batik Air is strengthening their international network by launching new direct routes to Shanghai and Sydney, marking a important step in it’s expansion strategy as Malaysia gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
The airline will begin it’s Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai service on 23rd June 2026, operating by Boeing 737 aircraft. The new route expands Batik Air’s growth in China, complementing it’s existing services to cities such as Changsha, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xiamen, and Zhengzhou. Shanghai, is a major economic and cultural hub, attracting business and leisure travelers with it’s blend of historic landmarks, modern skyline, and vibrant commercial districts.
Strengthening Presence in Australia
Batik Air will launch a non-stop Kuala Lumpur-Sydney service beginning 1st July 2026. The route will operate daily using Airbus A330 aircraft, offering greater capacity and enhanced comfort for long-haul travel.
The new service builds on Batik Air’s Australian operations, which includes Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, as well as Sydney via Denpasar. The airline also operates 14 weekly flights directly between Kuala Lumpur and Perth, underscoring the importance of Australia within its international network.

Supporting Travel Demand and Tourism Growth
Batik Air chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy said the introduction of both routes reflects a demand-driven strategy with the current market condition.
“Batik Air continues to align its network with sustained market demand, and the addition of Shanghai and Sydney strengthens two of our most important international corridors. These routes support tourism and business travel while enhancing overall connectivity between Malaysia and key global markets”, he said.

The expansion comes as the continued growth in Malaysia’s tourism sector. In 2025, the country recorded 4.7 million approximately visitors from China and more than 500,000 from Australia. This highlights the strong travel demand between these markets.
Improved connectivity, and travel facilitation, including visa-free access for Malaysians who visits China for short stays, are expected to further boost mobility while Australia sees a steady demand driven by business, tourism, and visiting friends and relatives.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
Beyond network expansion, Batik Air is also focusing on improving the onboard experience, particularly for families. Its ‘Kids-Eat-Free’ initiative offers complementary meals for children.

The airline provides a selection of more than 20 pre-purchased meals and beverages as well, allowing passengers to customize their experience while supporting sustainability. With the Shanghai and Sydney being added, Batik Air continues to reinforce it’s role as regional connector, facilitating greater travel flows, commercial exchange and people-to-people ties across the Asia-Pacific.
