Uthayakumar, a 7-year-old boy from Sekolah Kebangsaan Tamil Batu Caves, tragically died after being hit by a van on March 30, 2026. The van driver involved in the incident was charged at the Selayang Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
According to the Gombak District Police Headquarters Traffic Division, the driver, identified as M. Vijayan, is 50 years old. He has been charged under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987. The incident occurred in front of the Sai Ananda Foundation at Kampung Laksamana, Batu Caves.

Reports indicate that the driver allegedly struck the boy after he had just exited the van. The driver then reportedly reversed the vehicle, causing a wheel to run over the child. Sridevan, Uthayakumar’s father and a witness to the incident, lodged a police report on the same day. Both Sridevan and Uthayakumar’s mother, Rathi, expressed frustration that the driver had not been charged in court, even after eight days had passed since the incident.

On April 7, 2026, Puan Sarojinee, Head of the DHPP Gombak, and Encik Poobalan Panniselvam, Special Officer for the Indian Community N24 DUN Semenyih and Chairman of the Persatuan Progresif Perikemanusian Selangor, visited Uthayakumar’s family. They were accompanied by their associates to offer moral support during this difficult time and expressed their willingness to assist the family in seeking justice for the tragic loss.
