Penang’s Tamil Schools received a boost as they received a contribution of facilities and educational materials aimed to improve both learning environments and academic outcomes.

In a Facebook post, Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu shared his appreciation to Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Penang president Dato’ S. Parthiban and the organizing team for successfully carrying out this initiative. Bagan Dalam assemblyman Kumaran Krishnan, Senator Dr. Lingeshwaran R. Arunasalam, and Penang State Education Department director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad also attended the event.

Air-conditioners for Student Comfort
A total of 70 air conditioning units were distributed to 28 Tamil schools in Penang, with each school receiving at least two units. The contribution was valued at RM100,000. It was funded by 10 MICCI Penang Business members as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts.

This initiative complements the Penang state government’s RM2.1 Million allocation for Tamil schools in 2026, for upgrading infrastructure and improving overall school conditions for students.
Also 1,000 Bahasa Melayu empowerment training books were distributed to 853 Year Six students. The books are built by Professor Dr. Vijayaletchumy Subramaniam and her team from Universiti Putra Malaysia. The book is to strengthen the students’ fluency in the language.

The state government allocated RM50,000 in 2026 for the Bahasa Melayu empowerment programe, including RM30,000 for purchase of these books.

This initiative is a collaboration between government, educational institutions and private sector in supporting the Tamil schools development in Penang.
