Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced a mentor-mentee programme which is aimed to strengthen the nation’s literacy ecosystem and nurturing young writers. She mentioned that the programme will involve National Laureates (Sastarawan Negara) who will mentor young literary talents from an early stage.
The initiative is expected to create a more structured pathway for aspiring writers while ensuring the continuity of Malaysia’s literary heritage. The announcement was made during an event honouring the late Mana Sikana, whose real name was Dr Abd Rahman Napiah, as the 16th National Laureate, the country’s highest literary recognition.

Guidance from National Laureates (Sastarawan Negara)
Under the programme, experienced literary figures will guide and mentor young writers by sharing their expertise, knowledge, and experiences in the field of literature. Fadhlina said the involvement of National Laureates would help shape future generations of writers and contribute towards building a more vibrant and sustainable literary community in Malaysia.
Collaboration with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and Literary Community
The ministry will work closely with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and other literary communities to implement the initiative effectively. This collaboration aims to create a strong support system for young talents by providing them with opportunities, resources, and exposure to grow in the literary field.

Fadhlina highlighted that literature plays a crucial role in shaping identity, values, empathy, and civilisation. She stressed that a strong literary culture is important in building a knowledgeable and compassionate society while preserving the nation’s cultural and linguistic heritage.
The mentor-mentee initiative reflects the government’s commitment to preserving Malaysia’s literary legacy while empowering the next generation of writers. With structured guidance and strong institutional support, the programme is expected to boost the nation’s literary ecosystem and inspire more young Malaysians to pursue writing and literature.
