Her campaign became more than just a political campaign. It was a fight against the systematic injustice, especially in crimes against women. She backed a strong message, “We want justice”, her presence resonated with many of them who saw her not as a candidate, but as a voice for countless unheard victims.

Her entry in politics had mixed reactions. Some saw it as a powerful move to fight for her rights, and others questioned the politicisation of a movement that began as a collective call for justice.

The Case that Sparked a Nation

The justice Debnath is fighting for is the tragic death of her 31-year-old daughter, who was a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College.

August 2024, the young doctor was found dead in the hospital premises after being brutally raped and murdered while she was on duty. The case became a outrage nationwide, with many protesting across India demanding for safety for women and medical professionals.

After investigation and CCTV footage, the police arrested Sanjay Roy who was sentenced life imprisonment without parole. However, the victim’s family expression dissatisfaction, believing that more people were involved in it.

More Than a Political Win

Ratna Debnath’s victory is not just a political win, it represents a continuation of a fight that began in grief. From standing outside the courtrooms to standing on political stages, her journey shows her personal strategy to public action. As she starts her new role, many people are expecting her to bring justice and change the system that has been demanding.
