Renowned Indian American neurologist Dr. Dileep Yavagal was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award in the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2026, which was by the Association of Indian American Neurologist (AINA) in collab with American Brain Foundation.
He received the recognition for decades of contribution on stroke treatment and neurological care all over the world.
Dr Dileep is also the chief of interventional neurology and professor of clinical neurology and neurological surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
He is known for helping establish mechanical thrombectomy as standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke. And he has worked on major clinical trials, like SWIFT PRIME, and was a important role in changing the global stroke treatment guideline.
Mechanical thrombectomy is a procedure to remove blood clots from blocked arteries in the brain, especially in improving survival and recovery rates for stroke patient.
A part from medical success, Dr Dileep also focused on making advanced stroke care more accessible, specially in underserved and rural communities. He was the one who found Mission Thrombectomy, a global initiative active in more than 90 countries.
This programme brings together training, advocacy, research and healthcare, planning to improve stroke treatment system in places where resources are less.
One of his recent projects is the GRASSROOT trial conducted across 8 stroke centres in India, studied the use of lower-cost, locally manufactured devices for stroke treatment. This showed that affordable technology could be delivered with strong clinical outcome.
He also researched inequality in United States. A study involved 24,000 patients from the rural who received less thrombectomy treatments compared to urban patients.
His research highlighted how geography and access to specialist centre continue to impact survival and recovery.
Dr Dilleep was born and trained in India, he has maintained a close connection with India through teaching, medical research and healthcare collabs. This achievement is not only personal, but a proud success of the Indian community.
