While celebrities were showing up in their stunning outfits at the biggest international fashion stage (Met Gala 2026), the artisan statements is one of the most beautiful thing to be seen. An the massive handcrafted carpet was created in Kerala by hundreds of Indian artisans.

For the 4th consecutive year, the iconic Met Gala carpet was designed by Neytt by Extraweave, a designed house based in Cherthala. The 2026 look transformed Metropolitan Museum of Art into a dreamlike garden pathway, which perfectly matched this years theme “Costume is Art”.

Spanning over 6,800 square metres, the carpet was crafted by 400 to 500 artisans in 90 days. The team produced 57 giant roles, each was measured four by 30 metres, before shipping them from India to New York City for the big night.

A Blend of Art, Fashion, and Sustainability

The carpet was created by hand sorted natural sisal fibre which was sourced from Madagascar and featured elegant boucle texture designed to withstand heavy foot traffic while maintaining a luxurious appearance.

Designed alongside with the event Raul Avila, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and production designer Derrek McLane, the carpet had soft off-white tones painted to resemble weathered stone pathways with mossy green here and there.

The handcrafted creation welcomed the world’s biggest stars including the Kadarshian family, Beyonce, Rihanna, Indian businesswoman Isha Ambani, film producer Karan Johar and many more.

Indian Craftsmanship on the Global Stage

Founder Sivan Santosh said the artisans understood the importance of this project from the start, and was determined to make each year’s carpet better. Neytt by Extraweave previously designed carpets for several Met Gala themes, proved that traditional Indian craftsmanship continues to leave a strong impact on global fashion and design industry.

This year’s Met was featured by many Indian stars, and they took the stage, apart from celebrity fashion. Met Gala is another proud moment which reminds us that Indian artistry and handmade craftsmanship are now featuring into the worlds most watched event.
