Astro has partnered with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to raise awareness about safe internet practices among teenagers through its latest Vinmeen Exclusive Series, Maara, a techno-thriller that explores the consequences of irresponsible social media and artificial intelligence (AI) use.

Premiering on 6 July at 9.30pm on Astro Vinmeen (Channel 202), the series will also be available on Astro GO, On Demand and Sooka.

Prem Anand, Vice President, Indian Customer Business, Astro, said, “As a leading local content and entertainment brand, we are committed to elevating high-quality vernacular storytelling while creating meaningful platforms for local talent to thrive. In line with this, we have extended our local Tamil premieres to a full hour, since February 2026, enabling richer narratives and greater visibility for homegrown creators.

He noted that Astro has expanded its local Tamil premiere slot to a full hour since February 2026, allowing richer storytelling and greater visibility for local creators.

“Beyond entertainment, we continue to advance our ESG agenda through our ‘Voice for Good’ pillar, leveraging content as a force for positive social impact. We are proud to collaborate with MCMC on a timely initiative to promote digital responsibility among teens through Maara,” he said.

Meanwhile, MCMC said the collaboration supports its ongoing Safe Internet Campaign, which focuses on educating Malaysians on responsible internet usage, particularly among children and families. According to the commission, strategic collaborations with industry players and community-based programmes are key to creating a safer digital environment for all Malaysians.

Directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Jeyapragash Jeyamurthi (JP), Maara follows the story of 19-year-old university student Maragathavalli, better known as Maara, who dreams of becoming a successful social media influencer under the guidance of her mentor, Alice. As her desire for online fame and financial success grows, Maara begins making unethical decisions, including exploiting her disabled sister for viral content and leaking a rival’s private video, resulting in devastating consequences. As authorities close in, she attempts to erase her digital footprint before facing a difficult choice between confession and escape.

Featuring local stars Dishaaleny Jack, Punitah Shanmugam, Thivyah Kia, Satthiya Kandi, K Prakash and more

Through Maara’s story, Astro hopes to encourage viewers, particularly teenagers, to think critically about their online actions and understand that the pursuit of social media fame without ethical responsibility can have serious real-world consequences. By highlighting issues such as digital privacy, empathy and accountability, the series reinforces the importance of creating a safer and more responsible online community.
