Shankh Mitra, an Indian-origin business leader has been ranked as the world’s second highest-paid CEO after receiving a reported compensation package worth US$821 million (approximately RM3.9 billion). The recognition has attracted global attention, placing him just behind Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in terms of disclosed CEO compensation packages.
Shankh Mitra is the Chief Executive Officer of Welltower, a United States-based real estate investment trust (REIT) specialising in senior housing, healthcare facilities and wellness infrastructure.
From Kolkata to Corporate America
Born and raised in Kolkata, India, Shankh Mitra pursued a Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from Jadavpur University before moving to the United States to further his studies. He later earned an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School, building a strong foundation in finance and investment management.

Shankh Mitra began his career at PwC, where he worked in finance and advisory services. He later held investment and leadership roles at Fidelity Investments, Citadel LLC and Millennium Management, gaining extensive experience in real estate investments and capital markets before joining Welltower in 2016.
Leading Welltower’s Growth
Welltower is a United States-based real estate investment trust (REIT) that focuses on healthcare infrastructure, including senior housing communities, medical office buildings and wellness properties across North America and the United Kingdom. Shankh Mitra joined the company in 2016, became Chief Investment Officer in 2018, and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in October 2020.

Since taking over as CEO, Shankh Mitra has led the company through a period of significant growth. His strategy has focused on expanding Welltower’s healthcare real estate portfolio while capitalising on the increasing demand for senior housing and healthcare facilities driven by ageing populations. Under his leadership, the company’s market value and share price have risen substantially.
Why Is His Compensation So High?
Although reports state that Shankh Mitra received a compensation package worth US$821 million, this should not be mistaken for a cash salary. Approximately 99% of the package consists of stock awards that are linked to long-term performance targets. These shares will only fully vest if Shankh Mitra remains with the company and Welltower achieves specific financial and shareholder-return goals over the coming years.
As Welltower’s share price continues to perform strongly, the value of those stock awards has reportedly increased beyond their original estimated value. This type of compensation structure is common among large publicly listed companies, where executives are rewarded based on long-term company performance rather than fixed annual salaries.
Shankh Mitra’s achievement highlights the growing influence of Indian-origin professionals in global business leadership. From an engineering student in Kolkata to leading one of America’s largest healthcare real estate companies, Shankh Mitra’s journey reflects how expertise, strategic leadership and long-term vision can shape success on the global stage.
