Yogi B, a legendary hip-hop singer and national pride, has become an inspiration for aspiring Indian entrepreneurs after applying for and receiving support through the Skim Pembiayaan Usahawan Masyarakat India (SPUMI) under TEKUN Nasional.

The singer who has built a successful career spanning decades, recently applied for SPUMI assistance to support his upcoming music projects and business activities. His movie highlights that entrepreneurship is not limited to traditional businesses but also extended to creative industries.

Steven Sim Praises Yogi B’s Journey from Music Icon to Entrepreneur

Steven Sim Chee Keong, Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development, praised Yogi B for successfully transforming his passion for music into a sustainable business venture. During his visit to Yogi B’s studio, Steven Sim recalled the singer’s journey from his early days with Malaysian hip-hop group Poetic Ammo in the 1990s, where he gained recognition for creating music with a unique Malaysian identity through the use of multiple languages including English, Malay, Tamil and Cantonese.

Steven Sim described Yogi B as a “Malaysian product exported to the world”, highlighting how Malaysian creative talents can contribute to the country’s global reputation. The minister also emphasised that artists should be viewed as entrepreneurs, as their work involves managing businesses, investing in production, supporting teams and developing intellectual property.

According to Steven Sim, Yogi B’s decision to apply for SPUMI reflects how creative professionals can also benefit from entrepreneurial support. His application was submitted on June 26 and approved on July 1, 2026,  demonstrating an accessible process for eligible applicants.

SPUMI Provides Support for Indian Entrepreneurs

The Skim Pembiayaan Usahawan Masyarakat India (SPUMI) was introduced to support Indian entrepreneurs by providing financing opportunities to help them start, grow and strengthen their businesses. The scheme is open to eligible Indian business owners from various sectors, including small traders, food entrepreneurs, service providers, creative industry players and other business operators.

How to Apply for SPUMI

Indian entrepreneurs who are interested in applying for SPUMI can submit their applications through TEKUN Nasional by following the required application process.

Click here for the SPUMI Application Form

Step 1: Visit the nearest TEKUN branch

Applicants should visit the TEKUN branch closest to their business location to submit their application. It is important to apply at the branch based on the business address, not the applicant’s home address.

Step 2: Prepare the required documents

Before visiting the branch, applicants should ensure all necessary documents are ready, including valid business registration documents. Making sure all documents are complete and updated can help avoid delays.

Step 3: Request the SPUMI scheme

When applying at the TEKUN branch, entrepreneurs should specifically request for the SPUMI scheme to ensure they are applying under the financing programme specifically designed to support Indian entrepreneurs.

Step 4: Complete the application process

Applicants will be guided by TEKUN officers to complete the application form, which includes details about their business, purpose of financing, expected income and repayment ability.

Step 5: Attend an interview if required

For financing amounts above RM20,000, applicants may be required to attend a short interview to discuss their business plans and financial needs.

Step 6: Wait for approval

After submitting the application, TEKUN will review the documents and assess the application before making a decision. The approval process may generally take around three to six weeks, depending on the application.

Step 7: Receive funding and begin repayment

Once approved, the financing will be transferred to the applicant’s bank account. Repayment will begin the following month through available payment channels such as TEKUN branches, banks and other approved platforms.

Yogi B’s successful application for SPUMI represents more than just financial assistance, it highlights the importance of entrepreneurs taking the initiative to explore opportunities available to them. His journey from a celebrated musician to a creative entrepreneur proves that passion, discipline and business planning are essential in building a long-lasting career.

With more Indian entrepreneurs continuing to grow their businesses across various industries, stories like Yogi B’s can encourage others to take the first step and seek support to turn their ideas into successful ventures. As Steven Sim highlighted, every entrepreneur, whether running a small business, managing a company or creating art, plays a role in strengthening Malaysia’s economic and creative landscape.
