The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards, recognizing the best of Indian cinema for 2024 was announced yesterday. Among the biggest winners were Amaran, Maharaja and Dhanush who won awards for different categories.
Amaran Wins Three National Awards
The biographical film based on the life of late Major Mukund Varadarajan ‘Amaran’, has won 3 awards. Director Rajkumar Periyasamy won the Best Direction award, while GV Prakash Kumar won the Best Music Direction (Background Music). The film’s editor, R.Kalaivannan won the Best Editing Award.
Maharaja Earns Acting and Stunt Honours
The drama thriller ‘Maharaja’, which follows a father’s fight to seek justice for his daughter had also won a few awards.
Actress Sachana Namidass won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film. And stunt choreographer Anl Arasu made history by becoming the first winner from a Tamil film in the Best Stunt Category for his work in Maharaja.
Dhanush Celebrates Double Success
Actor Dhanush had another memorable National Awards success. He received multiple awards for his work in both front and behind the camera.
His directorial venture film ‘Raayan’ won the Best Tamil Film award, giving Dhanush his first National Award as a director. He also received a Special Mention for his performance in ‘Captain Miller’, directed by Arun Matheswaran.
Captain Miller also won the National Award for Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values.
Meiyazhagan Receives Special Mention
The emotional drama Meiyazhagan was also recognized at the National Awards. Sound designer Suren G received a Special Mention for his work on the film. In the same category, TS Hari Hara Sudhan won Best Sound Design award for the film ‘Blue’.
The 72nd National Film Awards has again celebrating outstanding talent in Indian cinema, with Tamil films making a strong impact through direction, music, editing, acting, stunt and sound design.
