For The Odyssey premiere in New York, Zendaya wore the “Ange” dress by avant-garde fashion label Matières Fécales, co-founded by Sri Lankan-Guyanese designer Steven Raj Bhaskaran and Hannah Rose Dalton. Styled by Law Roach, the ethereal couture look was originally curated as the finale piece of the label’s debut collection and was reportedly set aside for Zendaya nearly two years ago.
“Law asked us to save this dress for Z almost 2 years ago as it was our first couture finale look,” the brand wrote. “We kept our promise and turned down so many great requests but knew this was the right fit.”
Bhaskaran was born in Montreal to a Guyanese mother and Sri Lankan Tamil father. Bhaskaran, along with Dalton, began creating and selling garments made from recycled materials online, building a visual world that challenged conventional ideas of beauty and luxury. “We started creating our own pieces using recycled materials…we would sell them online. And that’s also how we started creating our look and doing our own thing,” Bhaskaran told in a recent interview.
This isn’t Zendaya’s first outing in Matières Fécales, having previously championed the avant-garde label. In March, Zendaya promoted ‘The Drama’ in a salmon-hued, frayed chiffon gown from their spring 2026 collection. Once again, she demonstrated why she is such a compelling match for its imaginative approach to design. Few actresses could sell a look of this scale without it feeling like a costume, but she made it feel completely believable.
Steven Raj Bhaskaran co-founded Matières Fécales with Hannah Rose Dalton in 2014. The duo, who met while studying pattern-making at LaSalle College in Montreal, originally launched the brand as a creative and social concept back in 2016, exploring radical self-expression and “post-human aesthetics”, but have since expanded into a fully fledged atelier in France.
