For many young performers, the journey into acting begins with a spark, sometimes through dance, sometimes through theatres, and sometimes through unexpected opportunities that slowly shape a lifelong passion. For Dishaaleny Jack, it was a combination of all three that started in a early age.
Her journey into the entertainment industry started at the age of four when she began learning Bharatanatyam. Performing on stage from such a young age helped her grow in confidence and sparked her love for entertaining. A few years later, she made a small appearance as an extra in the feature film Appalam. Around the age of 11 and 12, she received a role in the UK television series ‘Indian Summers’ after going through multiple auditions.
That opportunity was a turning point in her life. Growing up, Dishaaleny struggled with low self-esteem, but after being cast in Indian Summers, it changed the way she saw herself. It gave her confidence she had been searching for and made her realise that acting was where she truly belonged.

Although her studies came first, she continued acting whenever there was an opportunity. She appeared in short films before moving from Penang to KL to study at the National Academy of Arts and pursue acting full-time. Like many actors, she started with supporting roles in RTM and Astro productions before gaining more recognition through Kalyaanam 2 Kaathal. She later took on her first female lead role in Virus, and now 4 years later, she plays the lead role once again in Maara.
Looking back, Dishaaleny credits every audition, every project, and every director she worked with for helping her become the actress she is today. As she is our Artist of the Month, she opens up about her journey, her approach to acting, the lessons she’s learnt along the way and why Maara series is a story she hopes audience will connect with.
Bringing Every Character to Life
When audience watch a performance on screen, they only see the final result. What they don’t see is the amount of preparation that happens long before the cameras start rolling. For Dishaaleny, every character deserves to be understood inside and out, and that’s something she takes seriously with every role she accepts.
Q: As an actress, every role comes with a different personality, story and set of emotions. How do you usually prepare yourself for a new character, and what helps you connect with a role on a deeper level?

A: “The first thing I do is read the script over and over again. I go through it very thoroughly and spend a lot of time understanding not just the story, but the character’s emotional journey.
I rewrite every single scene from my character’s point of view in a simplified way on the script. I also include what my character is thinking and feeling in that moment. That POV becomes my guide throughout the entire production. Preparation doesn’t end once filming begins. Every rehearsal, every conversation with the director, and every improvisation on set helps me understand the character even better,” says Dishaaleny.
Listening to her describe her process, it’s easy to see that acting is much more than jist remembering lines. Every role is carefully built from inside out, allowing her to step into each character with authenticity.
Letting Her Work Speak
Like many other industries, acting or being in the industry comes with expectations and stereotypes. While some may chose to focus on them, Dishaaleny has always believed her energy is better to be spent improving and giving every role her best.
Q: The entertainment industry often comes with certain expectations and stereotypes. Have you ever faced any stereotypes in your journey, and how have you learned to navigate or challenge them?

A: “To be honest, I don’t let stereotypes occupy to much space in my mind. They probably do exist… but I’ve never allowed myself to dwell on that because it’s not something I can control.
I’ve always believed that my responsibility is to focus on my craft rather than on what people expect or assume. If my work can change people’s perception over time, that’s wonderful. But at the end of the day, I’d rather let my performance speak louder than any stereotype ever could, “ said Dishaaleny.
A Message to Dreamers
The road into acting is not easy. It comes with rejections, setbacks, and self-doubt. Having experienced those moments herself, Dishaaleny hopes more young girls will believe in their dreams, even when others don’t.
Q: For young girls who dream of becoming actresses and entering the entertainment industry, what would you like to tell them based on your own experiences and the lessons you have learned throughout your journey?

A: “Believe in yourself before asking anyone else to believe in you. Its not their job to believe in you, so have no expectations. You want it? You fight for it. Be adamant. You’ll hear ‘no’ far more often than you’ll hear ‘yes’ and that’s completely normal.
What I’ve learned is that sometimes the loudest “no” doesn’t come from casting directors. It comes from the people around you. There may be people who questions your dreams, tell you it’s unrealistic, or make your doubt your own abilities. Learn to shut you ears to that noise. Listen to feedback that helps you grow, but don’t let negativity from others define what you believe you’re capable of.
I’d also encourage young actors to never stop learning. Take acting classes, acting workshops, observe people, read scripts, build skills, look for castings, understand there’s no small or big role and keep working on your craft. Talent is important, but discipline, consistency, and preparation are what helped you build a lasting career” says Dishaaleny.
Her advice is simple, but powerful. Every journey comes with challenges, but believe in yourself, staying consistent and continuing to learn can make all the difference. Sometimes all it takes is refusing to give up.
Maara: More than Just a Story About Social Media
After 4 years, Dishaaleny plays a lead role in Maara, a series that explores the impact social media can have when the online fame goes to far. While the story is centred around the digital world, Dishaaleny believes it’s a message everyone can relate to.
Q: Your latest series, Maara, explores the pursuit of social media fame and the ethical boundaries that can be crossed along the way. Could you tell us about your character in the series, what drew you to the role, and what you hope audience will take away from the story?

A: What drew me to the role was how real the characters are. None of them are perfect, and none of them are completely innocent. Every character has flaws, makes mistakes, and faces the consequences of their choices.
One thing I hope audience take away is that social media itself isn’t the villain, its how we chose to use it. I hope the series encourages people to be more mindful and responsible in the way we use social media”, says Dishaaleny.
For Dishaaleny, Maara is more than just another series. It is a story that encourages people to think about the way social media shapes their everyday lives. Through it’s characters and their choices, she hopes audiences leave with the reminder that the platforms we use are not the problem, it’s how we choose to use them.
As Dishaaleny steps into a new chapter of her acting career, she continues to stay true to her passion. From overcoming self-doubt to leading a series with meaningful message, her journey shows the importance of self believe, embracing opportunities and staying committed to your path.
