A total of RM225,001 was raised during a fundraising dinner to support the redevelopment of Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple in Penang, bringing the temple a step closer to it’s reconstruction ahead of it’s upcoming Maha Kumbhabhishegam.
Penang State EXCO Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu shared the update in a FB post, where he stated the importance of preserving temples as part of the community’s cultural and religious heritage.
He said temples are not just places of worship but also important institutions that helps preserve traditions, values, and identity of the Indian community for future generations.
Support for Temples across Penang
Dato Sundarjoo said that since becoming a people’s representative, he has worked with Indian temples in Penang to address many long-standing issues. To date, he and his office have helped resolve 27 temple-related matters, including issues that involves land, infrastructure, redevelopment, financial challenges and other concerns.
Temple Redevelopment Needs more Funding
The committee of Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple, approached Dato Sundarajoo last year for help in completing it’s redevelopment before the temple’s Maha Kumbhabhishegam. Back then, the temple faced a challenges with the funding as they only had around RM800,000.
Although the committee organized a charity singing programme to raise funds, the amount collected wasn’t enough to complete the redevelopment works. Seeing the temple’s historical and cultural important, Dato Sundarajoo said he worked with the committee to speed up the fundraising efforts.
On 20th June 2026, Dato Sundrajoo attended the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple Fundraising Dinner with YB Kumaran Krishnan and Tan Sri Ramesh. In that event, RM225,001 was successfully raised.
The amount showed the generosity, unity and strong commitment of the community in preserving religious and cultural heritage. Dato Sundarajoo thanked every donor and supporter who helped with the fundraising.
He also said with the continued support, he is confident that the remaining funds can be raised and the redevelopment of Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple can be completed in time for it’s upcoming Maha Kumbhabhishegam.
